How to use strawberries in drinks
There are a number of ways you can mix strawberries into a refreshing cocktail or mocktail. It’s best to start with the ripest strawberries that you can!
- Strawberry purée: Make a smooth blend of fresh strawberries — all on their own — to make a delicious purée to mix into drinks. You can also strain out the seeds of the purée for a smoother drinking experience.
- Strawberry simple syrup: Perhaps my favorite of all is cooking up a homemade syrup with water, sugar and either fresh or frozen berries. This creates a sweet syrup that you can pour into cocktails and mocktails like an Italian soda. (Bonus, you can always drizzle it over vanilla ice cream.)
- Muddled strawberries: Drinks like a strawberry mint julep or mojito ask for fresh berries smashed with a muddler * to release their juices and essential oils.
- Blended strawberries: Blending fresh or frozen berries is a surefire way to bring flavor of fresh berries into your beverages. Think smoothies, frozen margs and daiquiris.
- Dehydrated strawberries: You can cook, blend or shake up dehydrated strawberries into cocktails! They are great crushed up in a strawberry sugar rim, too.

Tips for making strawberry drinks
- Don’t toss strawberries that are about to go bad! That’s when they are at their ripest and most flavorful, even if they’re not pretty. Use them in syrups and blended or muddled drinks, or stash them in the freezer for another day.
- Swap frozen berries for fresh. Frozen strawberries work best in blended cocktails or strawberry simple syrup, while fresh is better in muddled drinks and as strawberry garnishes.
- If you prefer a smooth drink, strain blended or muddled strawberries through a fine mesh sieve * to remove seeds and pulp for a cleaner finish.

Food pairings
Strawberries pair well with citrus (like lime or lemon juice), fresh herbs (such as basil or mint) and spices (like ginger ale or cinnamon) to create balanced and flavorful drinks, but this goes for food too.
Try serving these refreshing cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks with fruity treats like lemon bars and peach salsa and berry-focused dishes like prosecco popsicles. They’re also great with salty appetizers like loaded steak nachos and pita bread with whipped feta dip.
