Strawberry Basil Margarita Recipe
I am always on the hunt for new margarita flavors. The classic margarita is great and all, but margaritas are much more fun when you incorporate spirits and fruits.
For example, take this Blue Habanero Margarita. Or these Sweet Blood Orange Margaritas. Or this Watermelon Orange Margarita Punch.
See? So much more exciting.
Cinco de Mayo is next week, and that’s reason enough to throw a giant margarita party. I say it’s time to get out the blender and have some serious fun with making the best margarita recipes.
(Hint: You’re going to need these cactus glasses!)
Why you’ll love this recipe
I think my husband might love them more than me. We have already made them again, per his request.
When I first made them, he said, “I don’t know what these taste like, but they’re amazing.” (That’s a compliment, right?)
I think what he meant to say was the fresh, aromatic, peppery taste of basil seeps through the tart sweetness of the blended strawberries and lime juice.
Our favorite, normally-sharp tequila gets eclipsed by the garden flavors of the basil, strawberries and lime.
If you love frozen margaritas, then you will love trying this recipe with frozen strawberries instead of fresh. You should add 1 cup of ice as well.
Ingredients
To make these strawberry basil margaritas, you will need to pick up these ingredients at the grocery store.
If strawberries are in season (spring and summer, depending on where you live), head to your local farmers market for the freshest berries. Grab some basil while you’re at it too!
- fresh strawberries (frozen are okay too)
- tequila or mezcal
- fresh limes, for juice and garnish
- triple sec (such as Cointreau)
- basil simple syrup (which you can make with sugar, water and fresh basil)
- granulated sugar, for the rim
- extra basil sprigs, for garnish
You’ll also need a quality blender to mix these up!
How to make Strawberry Basil Margaritas
To make them, you’ll need to make a basil-infused simple syrup, then you’ll blend it together with fresh, hulled strawberries, lime juice, triple sec and tequila.
For tequila, I used silver because that’s what I had on hand, but you can use añejo — that would be my preference for sure. Learn how to choose the right tequila.
You’ll chill the blended base to infuse it further, then serve! Then, I garnished my margaritas with a sugar rim and a sprig of bright basil leaves.
Seriously. You need to try them. And this Margarita Granita! And the other suggestions I had! See why a margarita night is most definitely in order? Don’t make me say I told you so!
