Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri recipe

There is nothing more magnificent than a fresh strawberry. Those rutilant, succulent berries are by far the best thing about this season. And this year, I can’t seem to get enough of them.

I discovered a dreamy little farm near my in-laws that has an incredible farm stand. Between there and the local farmers market and our CSA box, we’ve been just about drowning in strawberries.

I’m not mad about it at all. With those ripe and  in-season strawberries, I’ve made strawberry mint juleps and strawberry basil margaritas. Not to mention all the berries and granola we’ve had for breakfast!

But the other day, it was time for something different. So I decided to put them to use in a new strawberry cocktail recipe. These incredible frozen strawberry daiquiris! And now I’m sharing them with you.

What are frozen daiquiris?

The daiquiri is a classic drink made with rum and lime juice. To be honest, the traditional cocktail isn’t what you’ll see sloshing around in a slushie machine.

Classic daiquiris are stronger. Made with rum, lime juice and simple syrup, they’re served neat, usually in a coupe glass.

The classic daiquiri is a very different drink than their frozen cousin with the same name. And while I love a classic one, today I’m here with one of our frozen friends.

Frozen daiquiris might not be traditional, but they are fun and so refreshing on a hot summer day!

Tools & glassware

You’ll need a few kitchen tools to make this classic frozen cocktail. It is beneficial to have a powerful blender so that you can easily blend the ice! You will also need a jigger to measure the rum and a measuring spoon to measure the lime juice.

If you are making fresh squeezed lime juice, make sure you have a citrus juicer. You’ll get the best results squeezing your own citrus juice. Make sure you’ve got two glasses to serve these strawberry daiquiris cocktails too!

A strawberry huller is also a must if you are using fresh berries. It helps you remove the stems from the berries quickly and effortlessly. I love mine!

Ingredients

If you’re ready to liven up your next party, there’s a few simple ingredients you’ll need to have on hand. Here’s what to add to your list to make my favorite frozen strawberry daiquiri recipe:

  • whole strawberries fresh or frozen
  • fresh-squeezed lime juice
  • light rum
  • ice cubes

Substitutions & variations

Fresh or frozen berries: You can use fresh strawberries or frozen strawberries. If it is strawberry season, then I highly recommend using fresh! The fruity sweetness of a strawberry that is ripe will totally make this drink extra delicious. When I have a surplus, I usually hull them with a strawberry huller and put them in a ziptop bag in the freezer.

Sweeten it up: If you’d like a bit more sweetness in your frozen strawberry daiquiri, you can use a bit of simple syrup. You can even add extra strawberry flavor with a nice homemade strawberry simple syrup! Or, add more depth of flavor with something like basil simple syrup or mint simple syrup.

Other fruits: You can really make these homemade daiquiris with just about any fresh fruit. Try them with lemon, raspberries or peaches, or you can keep it traditional with lime. It’ll make a good drink, no matter the fruit used!

Not a fan of rum? You can switch up the alcohol in a daiquiri really easily. Tequila or vodka are great substitutes if you’re out of rum.

Virgin daiquiri: Instead of the rum, add a zero-proof spirit like Ritual rum alternative or Seedlip Garden 108. You can also just omit the booze entirely and add a splash of orange juice for flavor.

Shaken daiquiri: Don’t want a frozen one? You can make a shaken strawberry daiquiri on the rocks or neat with this recipe.

Best rum for a Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri

There are lots of choices out there, but you will want to use a silver rum for these daiquiris. Also known as a light rum or white rum, it’s smooth and crisp, and pairs well with fruity flavors.

You can also use gold rum (also known as oro or ambre), which is medium-bodied, slightly stronger and aged in oak barrels. But purists would tell you to sip on that stuff straight, and not use it in a frozen cocktail like this. If you want to use something like dark rum, or even spiced rum, then you do you!

Whatever you choose, know that I always recommend the best rum you can afford. I often buy Bacardi for a budget buy, but I also like Cruzan and Plantation. Don’t miss this guide to rum for my other top picks.

This homemade strawberry daiquiri is a wonderful way to use up your farmers market strawberries. Here’s how to make it:

  1. Place the fresh or frozen berries into your blender. Then add the rum, the fresh lime juice and ice cubes.
  2. Start the blender and blend until the ingredients are well combined and have a consistent slushy texture.
  3. Grab the glasses that you want to use and split the frozen strawberry daiquri between the two cups.

Tips & tricks

Check out these few tips to make the best frozen strawberry daiquiri:

  • Use fresh lime juice instead of store-bought bottled stuff. The fresh lime juice is like a taste of the tropics! So much better and more bright and fresh than something bought at the grocery store.
  • You can make these fruity slushies more icy if you want. Add extra ice and blend away until it is the perfect slushy consistency. Just taste test your frozen strawberry daiquiri before serving because it may need more strawberries or lime juice to balance out the flavor.
  • If you are making this delicious cocktail on a hot day, serve immediately. The longer it sits, the quicker the ice will melt and make your frozen daiquiri really runny.

What to serve with Frozen Strawberry Daiquiris

They’d be great with anything strawberry, like chocolate covered strawberries or strawberry rhubarb pie.

Daiquiris are also a must for Mardi Gras, so enjoy them for a party with all your favorite New Orleans dishes like popcorn shrimp or boudin balls for an appetizer.

A spread of delicious cajun pastalaya, flavorful seafood gumbo and warm shrimp hushpuppies would be great for a New Orleans-themed dinner.

FAQ

What is the main alcohol in a daiquiri?

Rum is the classic alcohol used in a proper daiquiri. Most people use light rum, while others are less of daiquiri purists and will use any kind of rum they have on hand. Others swap it out entirely and use something like tequila or vodka, though one could argue that makes it an entirely different cocktail.

Is a daiquiri a strong drink?

Depending on the recipe, you could have a very strong drink or a mild one. You can make a drink stronger by adding more rum and reduce it’s strength by using less rum.
