What is a Daiquiri?

The Daiquiri is a classic cocktail made with rum, citrus juice and sugar. The traditional daiquiri recipe is essentially a rum sour.

While famously attributed to the author Ernest Hemingway and 1930s Cuba, the classic rum cocktail likely dates back to Cuba prior to the Spanish-American War.

The Daiquiri rose to fame in the United States during World War II, when Caribbean rum was much easier to find than foreign whiskey.

When served shaken, it’s usually served in a martini glass or coupe glass. When frozen, it’s traditionally served in a daiquiri glass with a straw — or if you’re in New Orleans, likely a plastic cup!

Ingredients for a raspberry lemonade include raspberries and lemons.

Ingredients

You only need a handful of ingredients for this easy rum cocktail. Here’s what to grab at the grocery store and liquor store:

Fresh raspberries

This cocktail calls for muddling fresh raspberries with citrus and raspberry jam. If you don’t have fresh raspberries on hand, you can simply use a little more of the jam, but it will make for a sweeter cocktail.

While fresh fruits always muddle the best, frozen raspberries will also work. I suggest letting them thaw for about 5-10 minutes or they won’t muddle together as nicely.

Raspberry jam

You can use any kind of raspberry preserves in this recipe. (My favorite jams ever are made by Bonne Maman.)

Raspberry simple syrup makes a great substitute that you can make with sugar, water and fresh raspberries.

If you don’t have either raspberry jam or syrup, you can use 3 tablespoons of honey, agave nectar, or simple syrup.

Limes and lime juice

Lime juice is crucial to the daiquiri. Citrus adds an important zing that provides balance to the sweet rum and tart raspberries.

I always recommend fresh lime juice if you have it on hand, but feel free to use a good quality lime concentrate instead in a pinch.

While traditional daiquiris are made with lime, you can also use lemon juice and lemon wedges instead using the same ratios.

Tip: Room temperature citrus is easier to juice than cold, refrigerated fruit. Set your citrus fruits out on the counter for a couple hours to warm up before juicing them.

Orange liqueur

Triple sec is a clear-colored orange liqueur that adds a slight hint of sweet orange flavor to the cocktail, plus a little extra booziness.

A pricier orange liqueur like Cointreau or Grand Marnier may be used in place of triple sec.

Rum

Light rum, also known as silver rum or white rum, has no color. It is light, crisp and great for mixing.

You can also use aged rum, which is medium-bodied and slightly stronger than light rum, as it has been aged in oak barrels.

This recipe calls for gold rum, but you can use any rum that you have on hand. You can even use spiced rum for more spiced flavor. Dark rums might change the color of the cocktail, so I’d stick to white or light-colored rums.

Variations and substitutions

Spiced Raspberry Daiquiri: Spiced rum adds some extra depth of flavor to this drink,

Top Shelf Raspberry Daiquiri: Use a high quality aged rum and a top shelf orange liqueur like Cointreau or Grand Marnier for an elevated drink.

Virgin Raspberry Daiquiri: Use a rum-like zero-proof spirit such as Ritual rum alternative instead of regular rum to make a non-alcoholic daiquiri.

Best Daiquiri Glassware

Since this is a shaken daiquiri, a coupe glass or martini glass works well for sipping this raspberry cocktail.

If you make a frozen daiquiri, a hurricane glass — named for old-timey hurricane lanterns — is a classic choice.

Shaken Raspberry Daiquiri

Let’s talk about how to make these delicious raspberry daiquiris! Here’s how to make the shaken version:

Raspberries and lime wedges sit together in a cocktail shaker.
A wooden muddler rests next to a glass with smooshed raspberries and lime wedge.

Get out a cocktail shaker. Add fresh raspberries, lime wedges, and raspberry jam and muddle together until the juices release.

Add rum, lime juice, triple sec, and ice to the shaker and shake vigorously for 30 seconds.

Using a sieve, double strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer over your glass of choice to remove the pulp and raspberry seeds.

Garnish with a skewer of fresh raspberries and serve immediately.

Frozen Raspberry Daiquiri

Frozen daiquiris are the best on a super hot day. For a delicious frozen version of this daiquiri, you’ll need to get out your blender. (A powerful blender that can break up ice well is best for frozen drinks.)

Place the raspberries, raspberry jam, rum, lime juice and triple sec in a blender. Pulse for 30 seconds until combined and the raspberries are broken up.

Add 1 cup ice to the blender and give it another whirl until all the ice is blended up and no big chunks of ice remain.

Pour into daiquiri glasses and garnish with fresh raspberries and maybe a cocktail umbrella!

Tips for Success

You can jazz up this drink by garnishing it with a few raspberries on a cocktail pick. A lime wheel would also be pretty.

For a more top-shelf flavor, Cointreau may be used in place of triple sec. A quality rum helps too.

The spiced rum adds some extra depth of flavor to this drink, however regular white rum will also work.

What to serve with daiquiris

Rum cocktails are especially tasty when paired with seafood, like fish tacos or ceviche.

For a New Orleans-themed menu, serve popcorn shrimp, jambalaya, beignets and some more Mardi Gras cocktails.

For dessert, serve these raspberry drinks with more raspberry treats, like raspberry donuts, raspberry parfaits or raspberry king cake.
