If you watched Scooby and the gang solve mysteries on Saturday morning cartoons, you’re probably old enough to pay homage with this nostalgic shot recipe! Bright green just like the iconic van, the Mystery Machine, these super tasty shots are a delicious party treat to offer your guests.

They’re packed with tropical flavors. I mean, absolutely packed. They contain coconut rum and pineapple juice, plus melon and banana liqueurs, and are mixed and topped with fluffy whipped cream. The green color comes from combining the yellow crème de banane with bright green Midori, the very same one you might know from the Midori Sour.

What is a Scooby Snack shot?

The Scooby Snack shot, or Scooby-Doo shot, is a sweet and fruity alcoholic shot recipe featuring coconut rum, pineapple juice, banana liqueur, melon liqueur and whipped cream.

I couldn’t find a lot about the history of it, but you’ll find it’s a popular recipe on TikTok, where some people refer to them as Scooby Snack shots, while others simply call them Scooby Snacks.

The drink’s name likely comes from the Scooby-Doo TV and movie franchise about a team of detectives and their Great Dane who travel around in a lime green van — almost the same color as the drink. The canine main character of the same name is usually nervous to do what his friends have planned, so they entice him with dog treats called Scooby Snacks.

The tropical flavor suggests it could also be a nod to a brand of fruit snacks, also called Scooby Snacks, that has been discontinued.

For this recipe you will need a cocktail shaker, strainer and jigger. These are all part of a basic bartending set, so if you have one of those you’re good to go.

If you don’t, you can measure the ingredients in tablespoons: 1 ounce is equal to 2 tablespoons. (And ¼ ounce is equal to ½ tablespoon.)

And of course, you’ll need shot glasses! These shots are 2.5-ounces, so use that size. You can add them to 1-ounce glasses, just shake them up first and strain them into the glasses to get about 2 shots’ worth in one go.

If you don’t want to enjoy it as a shot, you can double the recipe and serve it as a Scooby Snack cocktail in a martini glass or old-fashioned glass. This would be great for a more upscale event — serve them with an elegant appetizer like salmon ceviche.

So what’s in a Scooby Snack? You need three types of alcohol, plus pineapple juice and whipped cream. Grab these on your next trip to the liquor store and supermarket:

  • Midori melon liqueur: Find this one in the Liqueur section of your liquor store. It’s in an emerald-green bottle with a bumpy texture, and it’s what gives these shots their fun bright green color!
  • Banana liqueur: It’s also called Crème de Banane. This one is bright yellow in color. You can use it to make banana daiquiris.
  • Coconut rum: Next, grab a bottle of coconut rum. It’s clear in color. 
  • Pineapple juice: Grab a few cans of 100% pineapple juice, too.
  • Whipped cream: This adds the creamy element to the shots. Some people use heavy cream, but I don’t feel it’s necessary. You’re already buying whipped cream for the topping, so just use a smidge in the shaker too.

Substitutions & variations

Mix things up with one of these variations:

Blue Scooby Snack shot: Use blue curaçao instead of the melon liqueur. This bright blue liqueur has an orange flavor, so it will still be delightfully flavorful — and colorful.

Scooby Snack cocktail: If you don’t want to enjoy this recipe as a shot, you can double the recipe and serve it in a cocktail glass, such as a martini glass (up AKA no ice) or old-fashioned glass (on the rocks).

Instructions

Making Scooby Snacks is super simple. Here’s what you need to do:

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, then pour in the coconut rum and banana liqueur. Next, The Midori and pineapple juice. You will need equal parts of each — you can remember that, right?

Next a little dollop of whipped cream. Shake vigorously until the mixture is smooth and the whipped cream is well incorporated. (You can use heavy cream here if you prefer.)

Strain the mixture into a 2.5-ounce shot glass. For an extra touch, top it off with another dollop of whipped cream just before serving. You could also add a maraschino cherry on top as a garnish, if you like! Or even a dog-bone shaped graham cracker.

      Hi Stacey! I am not sure I understand your question, but I think you may be referring to the dog treats in the photos. My dog let me borrow some of her milkbones to use as props in these photos, but I probably wouldn’t eat them!
