What is a daiquiri?
A daiquiri is a classic cocktail that originated in Cuba. It is most often made with rum, fruit and a simple syrup. You can either shake the ingredients together or stir them, then serve in a chilled glass.
Frozen daiquiris are also popular! Just add all the ingredients into a blender and blend until it forms a slushy texture.
Tools & glassware
To make the syrup, you’ll need a saucepan, a mixing spoon, measuring cups and a fine mesh strainer. When making the drinks, you will need a mixing glass, bar spoon, jigger, and strainer. Don’t forget the chilled coupe glasses to serve!
If you are making the caramelized banana slice, then you’ll also need to have a heat-proof prep surface and kitchen torch.
Ingredients
To make this banana twist on a classic daiquiri, you’ll need a few specific ingredients. Check this list before your next grocery store run so that you can grab anything you need:
Syrup Ingredients
- sliced banana
- sugar
- water
- ground cinnamon
Daiquiri Ingredients
- aged rum
- lime juice
- banana syrup
- banana slice, brûléed or plain, for garnish
- sugar, for caramelizing
Garnishes
While the caramelized banana is my favorite garnish, there are loads of other garnishes you can use. A sprig of mint or a dehydrated lime slice would add some color and a bit of flavor.
A cinnamon sugar rim would be tasty, and a cinnamon stick would pair perfectly with that. Don’t forget about the tropical garnishes like a pineapple slice, maraschino cherry or some coconut shavings!
Best rum for daiquiris
An aged white rum is great for this simple daiquiri recipe. You can also use flavored rum, like coconut rum, to add a little something extra to this cocktail. Really, whatever you love most is a great choice. If you need some help finding a quality rum to use, check out my rum 101 post.
Substitutions and Variations
Turn this into a mocktail by subbing the rum for a zero-proof spirit.
Feel free to skip a few steps and use store-bought banana simple syrup instead of making it from scratch. It’s very easy to make and taste way better than bottled, but I can totally understand the need to save some time!
You can use different liquor if you’d like. Without rum, this won’t “technically” be a daiquiri, but it’d still be a super tasty cocktail.
To make a frozen daiquiri, blend these ingredients with 2 cups of ice in a blender. You can even add frozen bananas for a creamy texture and more banana flavor.
How to Make a Banana Daiquiri
Follow these step by step instructions to make a yummy banana daiquiri in no time. You’ll need to make the syrup first, then you can start making each cocktail:
In a saucepan over medium heat, cook the sliced banana with ¼ cup water and ¼ cup sugar until browned. This should take about 10 minutes. Once browned, stir in a pinch of cinnamon.
Reduce the heat to low and then stir in ¾ cup sugar and ¾ cup water until sugar has dissolved.
Remove the mixture from the heat and strain through a fine-mesh strainer to discard the solids. Allow the syrup to cool completely before using.
To make the daiquiri, add ice to a mixing glass. Add aged rum, lime juice and the banana syrup and then stir to combine.
Strain the cocktail into a coupe glass and garnish with a banana slice. To caramelize, place a banana slice on a heat-proof surface. Sprinkle a pinch of granulated sugar over a banana slice and brûlée with a kitchen torch.
Tips & tricks
Keep your bartending game strong with these simple tips and tricks:
- For the sweetest simple syrup, use ripe bananas. Ripe bananas are much more sweet and will create a delicious syrup!
- Make your cocktail the perfect temp by using chilled rum and chill lime juice. And don’t forget, fresh squeezed lime juice is always best.
- Don’t be afraid to experiment with flavors. Different spices and fun fruit can pair wonderfully with this tasty little cocktail!
Food pairings
Since this cocktail leans tropical, it would go great with some tropical salsa like cilantro pineapple salsa or fresh peach salsa. This is also the perfect cocktail to serve with coconut shrimp.
It’s also a tasty cocktail to serve with desserts like tiramisu trifle or madelines. It’d be so good with boozy dole whip too.
And don’t forget about banana treats! You could make gluten-free banana muffins or some chocolate chip banana bread to go with it. It works well as a brunch drink for sure. Or for dessert, enjoy it with a big scoop of chunky monkey ice cream.
FAQ
Daiquiris are most commonly made with white rum. You can use a different type of rum if your prefer — flavored rums are pretty popular to use in a daiquiri.
Since this homemade simple syrup doesn’t have a stabilizer, it is best to store it in an air tight container in the fridge. You can also freeze simple syrup! If you need more ideas, I have a whole post with the best tips and tricks on how to store simple syrup.
