Wake up to a glass of this protein-rich Peanut Butter Banana Bacon Elvis Smoothie. Based on The King’s famed favorite sandwich, this liquid breakfast stars peanut butter, banana, honey and bacon. Yes, bacon!
Elvis’s “Wake Up Little Susie” is probably one of my least favorite songs in the entire world. Why?
Probably the first thing to know about me? Don’t call me Susie. Or Sue. Or Susan. Or Susanne. Or Savannah.
I will forgive you if you misspell my name (“Susannah” is not intuitive) but I’ll definitely remember if you call me the wrong name more than once. My friends call me “Sus” or “Suze,” so those are fine, but all other variations are out.
I once had a professor who called me Suzanne for an entire semester, despite me correcting him often. I eventually gave up, and he finally got it right on the last day of class. *eyeroll*
“Wake Up Little Susie” is right up there with Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Susie-Q” and the folk song “O Susanna.”
Last weekend I had a conversation with my colleagues about this. When people learn my name is Susannah, they will sing these songs to me, not realizing that most strangers think it’s funny to sing them to me when they learn my name. This has been true ever since preschool.
Almost 26 years later and it’s still not funny. I’ll hop off my soapbox in a minute — but here’s your PSA for today:
Maybe don’t sing songs or repeat movie quotes to our friends who have names in songs or movies.

I’m getting off topic. Aside from “Wake Up Little Susie,” I do love some Elvis. I’m dying to visit Memphis one day and see Graceland for myself.
Plus, the King had some pretty great taste in sequins and sandwiches, which are two things I can get behind.
I first tried a peanut butter honey banana bacon panini at Parker and Otis in Durham. I used to sneak one of these melty indulgences every time I was nearby when I was living in Raleigh.
This puppy (not a hound dog) was grilled with melted peanut butter oozing off the sides, with soft banana bites, the extra sweetness of local honey and the added crunch of crispy bacon.
The first time I had it, it totally changed my life. (And my outlook on the presence of bananas in sandwiches.)
I got the idea to make this smoothie after my friend Meghan posted this Elvis cocktail.
It reminded me of that amazing sandwich, and now we make this Peanut Butter Banana Bacon Elvis Smoothie at least once a week for breakfast. (If you didn’t know, Chris and I are huge peanut butter fiends. See this Chocolate Peanut Butter Power Smoothie and this Peanut Butter Brownie Ice Cream for further proof.)
This smoothie will definitely leave you all shook up about breakfast, but it’s a good thing. It might even change your life.
