About this Passion Fruit Cocktail recipe

Sometimes happy accidents make the best drinks. You just never (That’s how I wound up with this burnt sugar syrup that is excellent in my popular s’mores old-fashioned.)

When I was testing my passion fruit martini recipe, I tried out a ton of variations. This classic cocktail recipe usually calls for passion fruit purée, which I was struggling to find in my local grocery stores.

I ended up buying passion fruit juice, to see if it would work. It made for a light and bright tropical cocktail with tons of elegance and whimsy! Since there’s no passion fruit purée or vanilla vodka, this passion fruit juice cocktail is not quite a traditional passion fruit martini — but it was too good not to share!

So that’s what you’ll find here, a fun, delicious and easy passion fruit cocktail made with bright and fresh ingredients. It tastes like summer vacation in a glass!

Why you’ll love this recipe

  • It’s full of sweet and tangy passion fruit flavor with hints of zesty lime.
  • With just five ingredients, it’s very simple to pull together.
  • Passion fruit brings a luxurious, velvety flavor that’s underutilized in cocktails.

Tools & glassware

For this passion fruit cocktail, you’ll need a good basic bartending set with a cocktail shaker, strainer and jigger for measuring.

Glassware-wise, you’ll need coupe glasses or martini glasses. You could also serve it on the rocks (AKA over ice) in an old-fashioned glass.

Ingredients

You can shop for the simple ingredients for this passion fruit cocktail at your local grocery store and/or liquor store. Here’s what you’ll need to make the recipe:

  • Vodka
  • Passion fruit liqueur
  • Passion fruit juice
  • Lime juice
  • Simple syrup (or another sweetener like agave nectar)
  • Passion fruit

Garnishes

A pretty garnish makes any cocktail look more professional. Plus, the aromas from a garnish will enhance every sip.

For a passion fruit cocktail, a piece of this unique fruit takes it over the top. Simply cut a fresh passion fruit in half and float it on top of the cocktail. I don’t recommend cutting slices as the seeds will easily fall out.

You could also use a lemon or lime twist, a sprig of mint or a slice of lime instead. A sugar rim could also be really fun!

Best bottles

For this drink you’ll need vodka and passion fruit liqueur. Here’s what I recommend:

  • Passion fruit liqueur: Passoã is perhaps the most well-known brand of passion fruit liqueur, but there are other brands out there like Giffard’s Crème de Fruits de la Passion. If you can’t find it, don’t worry. Any clear orange liqueur will work in its place. You can keep it simple with triple sec or go top shelf with Cointreau. You could also use passion fruit simple syrup instead of plain syrup to maintain the amount of fruity flavor.
  • Vodka: Always use the best alcohol you can afford! My go-to vodka brands right now are Tito’s, Deep Eddy, Reyka and Absolut. A bottom-shelf vodka can taste cheap and stand out in your drink — and not in a great way — so stick to the $15-20 range if you can!

Substitutions & variations

Mix things up by swapping out ingredients to make your own creations:

Passion fruit juice substitute: Using passion fruit purée instead of juice is an option, but it will change the look of the cocktail. Juice is more transparent, while purées will be opaque. If you can’t find passion fruit juice or purée, pineapple juice would probably taste the most similar.

Flavored vodka: One way to add a twist is to use a flavored vodka. A fruity vodka like strawberry vodka or pineapple vodka would be great twists. The passion fruit martini uses vanilla vodka, so that would also work if you want a slightly sweeter flavor. Gin or white rum would also be a great swap.

Non-alcoholic passion fruit martini: If you want to make this without booze, mix together 2 ounces passion fruit juice, 1 ounce of lime juice and 1 ounce of simple syrup. You can also use the recipe as written, but replace the vodka with a zero-proof and the passion fruit liqueur with orange juice or more passion fruit juice.

Tips & tricks

  • Use a chilled cocktail glass. Place your coupes in the freezer for an hour or so before mixing drinks.
  • Use fresh lime juice for the best flavor. Bottled concentrate can make a drink more tart than necessary.
  • A quality spirit will always improve your cocktails. Spring for a mid-price vodka.

Food pairings

Pair this sweet and stunning martini with an equally delicious dessert like passion fruit mousse or passion fruit meringue tart. Something tart like homemade lemon bars would also pair nicely.

The passion fruit martini is usually paired with small shot glasses of champagne. If you want to take things up a notch, this is an even fancier way to serve this drink!

If enjoying before a meal, pair it with some spicy or salty snacks like shishito peppers and garlic aioli. A cheesy and creamy creamy appetizer like goat cheese crostini or whipped feta dip would also complement the tart passion fruit flavor.

FAQ

What does passion fruit taste like?

Passion fruit tastes tart, yet sweet! Some compare the tropical flavor of passionfruit to other tart fruit like pineapple or kiwi. It can have a hint of a melon flavor too, and can be more sour than a lime. It’s very tasty and super tropical!

Can I make this recipe ahead of time for a party?

Yes, you can mix the ingredients (excluding the ice) in a pitcher and store it in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Go ahead and slice your passion fruit garnishes, too.
