Garlic aioli is super simple to make and is the perfect dipping sauce for so many different foods. It’s creamy texture and bold garlic flavor is hard to beat!

You can find different variations of aioli all over the place, but this easy recipe is one of my most favorite forms. The balance of tangy lemon to garlicky goodness is absolutely perfect.

With just four simple ingredients and five minutes of your time, you can create a dipping sauce that is restaurant quality. Pair it with dozens of different appetizers, side dishes, and even main dishes. A versatile sauce that add delicious flavor to anything!

My personal consumption of garlic aioli shows how much I love it! But it’s also great because:

  • You can make this sauce ahead of time and store it until needed. It stores well in the fridge and does not go bad quickly, so it’s an easy thing to prep. But if you forget, the good thing is that it only takes minutes to prepare! So it’s perfect for the last minute too.
  • Aioli is so versatile! Pair it with any dish you want and watch the flavor meld beautifully together.
  • There are no raw eggs in this recipe. While some people may be comfortable consuming a raw egg, others are not. This recipe uses no raw eggs but doesn’t compromise one bit on flavor.

What is aioli?

In its simplest form, aioli is an emulsion of garlic cloves and extra virgin olive oil. The traditional method has shifted over the years and most aioli is now made by simply combining raw egg yolks, olive oil, lemon juice and salt in a smooth sauce.

Many delicious recipes for aioli now use mayonnaise as the base since it is made from eggs and oil. This is why it is important to use real mayonnaise to make an aioli. Aioli can be flavored in many different ways and pairs well as a dipping sauce, sandwich spread, and so much more.

To make this great aioli recipe, you will need just a few simple tools. Make sure that you have a small bowl to mix the ingredients together and that you have a whisk or fork to combine everything well. If you prefer a smoother sauce, use a hand blender or food processor to blend until smooth.

You will also need measuring cups and measuring spoons in order to measure the ingredients perfectly. If you plan to mince your own garlic, have a sharp knife and/or garlic press. A citrus juicer will also be beneficial to easily squeeze fresh lemon juice.

Substitutions & variations

I used store-bought mayonnaise in this traditional garlic aioli, but you can use a homemade mayonnaise recipe if you prefer. I recommend using real mayonnaise and not miracle whip or something similar.

For a simple twist of flavor in this easy aioli recipe, use roasted garlic instead of raw garlic. This slight change adds a tasty depth of flavor to the sauce and a smoky element.

There are not many steps to making this easy garlic aioli recipe, which is always a plus. Here is how to make this delicious sauce loaded with tons of flavor:

While this is an incredibly simple dish to make, I always want to provide tip so that you can have the most success. Check out my pro tips and tricks to make the best sauce:

  • Use fresh squeezed lemon juice instead of store-bought bottled juice. The flavor is more fresh and will create a better end result for your sauce.
  • I highly recommend mincing fresh garlic. The jarred stuff from the store will work fine too, but freshly minced garlic always seems to make a difference!
  • Store leftover aioli in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. Stir well before serving.

Uses for Garlic Aioli

There are so many things that will pair well with garlic aioli. There are many different ways to use this sauce, like:

Dipping sauce: From shishito peppers to panko baked cauliflower bites to homemade french fries, there’s so many things to dip into this creamy and flavorful sauce! Sweet potato fries and even veggies like roasted green beans and carrots go so well with this sauce.

I’ve been known to even dip my famous fried pickles and popcorn shrimp in this delicious aioli too. You can also use this aioli as a dipping sauce for wings.

Spread: Slather it on a bun for a flavorful hamburger or add it to sandwiches — it’s a fabulous sandwich spread in place of mayo! You could even use it on avocado toast.

Drizzle: Make it a little thinner and drizzle it over pizza or even a slice of sloppy joe tater tot casserole.

Is aioli basically mayo?

While the two often have similar ingredients, aioli is different than mayo. In its classic form, aioli is often egg yolks and extra-virgin olive oil which is similar to mayo. However, aioli has now transformed into a world of different dipping sauces that are packed with flavor. In fact, it’s now easy to use mayo as a base for aioli!

Is there egg in aioli?

There is egg in aioli recipes when made from scratch and from mayonnaise, unless you use an eggless mayonnaise.
