Homemade Pita Chips recipe

When my sister was visiting recently, she whipped up a massive batch of baked pita chips for a party we hosted. We served them alongside a big bowl of white bean hummus and a charcuterie board for people to snack on while they mingled.

These crispy chips went so quickly! She left a few days later and I totally forgot to ask her for the recipe. But I noticed a few pita pockets were leftover, so I decided to give it try and recreate the easy homemade pita chips recipe she’d made.

My sister and I often cook the same way, without measuring, so I was pretty sure I could closely match the ones she made. (Later, she told me her secret is za’atar seasoning, but you can really use any seasoning you like!) And wouldn’t you know it, after baking them in a preheated oven they turned out to be the most lovely crunchy pita chips.

Sure, you can buy a box of pita chips at the grocery store. But why? You can easily make four times as many for a much more affordable price.

Buy a stack of fresh pita bread to cut up, season and then bake them yourself! These homemade baked pita chips are amazing as a snack all on their own, but you could also serve them with party dips like whipped feta dip or sriracha hummus.

Using kitchen shears, a knife or a pizza cutter, slice each pita into eight small triangles. Tear each of the pita pieces at the outer fold. You’ll end up with 16 wedges per pita pocket.

Arrange the pita triangles, rough side up, on the previously prepared baking sheet. They can overlap slightly but not too much. Then, drizzle with olive oil over top.

Bake the pita chips for 5-8 minutes until golden brown and crispy. If you prefer a crunchy chip, bake closer to 8 minutes. For softer, more chewy chips bake them closer to 5 minutes.

Tips & tricks

Here are some tips and tricks for making this recipe:

  • Make sure to keep the pita bread in mostly a single layer on the baking sheets, but it’s okay if they overlap a bit! You’ll just want to arrange them so that they bake evenly.
  • It is important that each pita piece is covered in olive oil. After drizzling it on, use a pastry brush to spread the oil across each triangle to ensure they are all covered.
  • Line your baking sheet with parchment paper to make clean-up easier and to avoid the potential of chips sticking to the bottom of the pan.

FAQ

Which is healthier, pita chips or tortilla chips?

Although neither chip has much nutritional value, pita chips do tend to be a more healthy option. They often have less fat content because they are baked instead of fried like tortilla chips. However, if you are looking for a healthy item to eat with your favorite dips, reach for vegetables instead!

Why aren’t my pita chips crispy?

If you end up with pita chips that did not crisp up, you likely did not bake them long enough or at the correct temperature. You may not have made them thin enough either! Try making the bread pieces more thin, and then make sure you are baking your pita chips for the correct bake time.
