With Halloween creeping up around the corner, it’s hard to ignore the shelves of candy at the store. There are so many options now!

As a kid, I delighted in finding Tootsie Rolls and their lollipop counterparts in my trick-or-treat bag. But as an adult, it’s fun to drink your nostalgia sometimes!

Tools & glassware

You’ll need 1-ounce or 2-ounce shot glasses for these Tootsie Roll Shots. You can use 1 ounce shot glasses or multiply the recipe to make stronger shots.

If you are crafting multiple shots, it’s best to employ a cocktail shaker instead of building them directly in the shot glasses. Plus, utilizing a shaker allows you to mix the ingredients with ice, to get that perfect chilly temperature.

Also, use a jigger to measure the ingredients accurately. Since you need a 50/50 ratio, it’s essential not to add too much of either ingredient.

Ingredients

You only need two simple ingredients to make this recipe. Here’s what to grab at the grocery store:

  • coffee liqueur: Coffee liqueur is what gives this shot its Tootsie Roll flavor. Kahlua and Tia Maria are popular brands, but you can use any brand. Making DIY coffee liqueur is also a delicious way to bring in your favorite coffee beans.
  • orange juice: Normally I suggest, squeezing your own orange juice for the freshest flavor, but with shot recipes, that effort can feel wasted. (But do it if you have the time and means!) When purchasing orange juice, then you should grab one that has no pulp or low pulp. If there is pulp, even just a little, it can ruin the texture of the shot.

Substitutions & variations

Tootsie Roll cocktail: The cocktail version of this recipe uses root beer instead of orange juice. It’s bubbly and bright, and is a fun Halloween cocktail as well. However, you can also try this shot recipe, doubled, in a martini glass for a fun drink.

Non-alcoholic version: If you want to try a non-alcoholic version, you can use Lyre’s Coffee Originale instead of coffee liqueur.

Instructions

If you’re making just one shot, you can mix it right in the glass, but likely you are making a few, so it’s best to use a cocktail shaker. Today I’m just making a couple so I did them in the glass!

For best results, stash your shot glasses in the freezer for an hour before mixing up these shots. Fill them halfway with orange juice…

Then add the coffee liqueur and fill it up to the top.

If using a shaker, fill it with ice cubes. Shake the mixture thoroughly, then strain it into the chilled shot glasses.

FAQ

What’s in a Tootsie Roll Shot?

The Tootsie Roll shot is made with just two ingredients, orange juice and coffee liqueur such as Kahlua or Tia Maria.

What’s the difference between the Tootsie Roll Shot and the Tootsie Roll Cocktail?

Both of these recipes have two ingredients, but they only have one in common. Coffee liqueur gives both of these drinks part of their Tootsie Roll candy flavor. The shot version combines it with orange juice, making it taste more like an orange-flavored Tootsie Pop lollipop candy. The cocktail version uses root beer with coffee liqueur — root beer brings an earthier, botanical flavor and tastes more like the plain chocolate version of the candy.
