Your ultimate guide to game day recipes

You want to know the great thing about game day? You don’t have to be a hardcore fan to enjoy it! I’m the first to admit that I’m not one to follow stats or standings, but when I’m with a crowd that wants to tune in, I’m all for it. After all, cheering on a team brings people together — much like good food and drinks do!

The key to game day recipes is to keep things simple. It isn’t the time to try an extensive, fancy recipe. Stick with tried and true flavors that are easy to make and easy to enjoy. Drawing inspiration from stadium fare is always encouraged!

These are the recipes that I reach for when I’m hosting family and friends for the big game or would work really well for a tailgate. I hope you enjoy them!

Quick tips for hosting

When it comes to game day, there are three key plays I like to use:

Would you like to save this?

We'll email a link to you, so you can come back to it later! Plus you'll get great new recipes each week!

  1. Big batches for big crowds. When you’re selecting a drink to mix, big batches are hard to beat. You can either select a recipe made for a group, like a punch, or scale your favorite drink so there’s enough for everyone. Just remember to wait on adding any bubbly ingredients (like ginger beer) until you’re ready to serve.
  2. Tweak things to fit the team. These recipes should serve as a good starting point, but feel empowered to make changes to fit the tastes of those you’ll be watching with. You can skip the meat in recipes for vegetarians, use alternative ingredients (like lactose-free cheese or gluten-free chips) or swap the booze for a non-alcoholic option.
  3. Have fun with it! Add nods to the team colors with the drinks you choose, re-name dishes after your favorite players or serve things in spirited vessels for a good time.

What to serve on game day

For an early kickoff, you can’t beat the classic Bloody Mary (or one of her friends). Turn it into a Bloody Mary bar so everyone can create their perfect drink! It’s the perfect compliment to a simple beermosa, which needs just two ingredients.

If you’re planning to serve a crowd, something like jungle juice is one of my favorites. With a little prep, you can have jello shots to enjoy in your team colors or opt for cocktail pouches that are easy to sip anywhere.

Combine two game day favorites into one tasty drink when you serve beeritas (beer margaritas). Don’t forget to offer a non-alcoholic option for those who prefer it — my favorites are the citrus ginger beer mocktail or a refreshing cucumber mocktail.
