About this Tomatillo Salsa recipe

This tomatillo salsa is seriously so yummy. The flavor is unbeatable and it’s addictive in the very best way! This recipe is inspired by the green salsa at Superica, a Tex-Mex style restaurant chain based out of Atlanta.

I went to one of their locations in Atlanta once and loved it so much! I was delighted when they opened one here in North Carolina. It is one of our favorite places to go on a date night! They always serve a classic red salsa as well as a green salsa in a mason jar with your tortilla chips. The red is excellent, but we always need a refill on the green salsa. It’s just so delicious!

The addition of avocado to this tomatillo salsa verde recipe makes it so creamy. You can make it spicier or milder if you want, but it has a nice amount of heat to it. But having this homemade salsa recipe means I don’t have to wait for date night for the best salsa ever.

Serve this with some homemade tortilla chips and you’ll truly be bringing restaurant quality food into the comfort of your own home! It’s also really yummy drizzled on totchos. However you decide to serve it, you’ve gotta try this amazing tomatillo salsa!

Tips & tricks

These few simple tips and tricks will help you make the best salsa ever:

  • If you don’t want the spicy kick to the salsa, then remove seeds from the peppers. It’s not extremely spicy, but they do bring a little bit of heat.
  • Stop the food processor every once in a while. Scrape down the sides and give things a stir with a silicone spatula. This will help ensure all of the ingredients are incorporated.
  • Always give the salsa a taste test before adding more salt! Add it little by little so that this tomatillo salsa doesn’t get too salty.

Food & drink pairings

Serve this alongside all of your other favorite dips, especially a batch of queso fundido. I love this salsa with some blackened steak nachos too.

This is a wonderful sauce to serve with enchiladas and apple cider pulled pork tacos. That spice from the serranos and bright tomatillo flavor is just irresistible.

Don’t forget the drinks too! Pair your chips and salsa with a classic margarita or a frozen margarita.

FAQ

Do you remove skin tomatillos?

You should remove the papery husk from tomatillos before using them! The tomatillos will likely have a sticky consistency once the husk is removed, so just rinse them before using.

Do tomatoes and tomatillos taste the same?

The flavors are similar, but definitely different. Tomatillos are tangy and tart, with just a slightly sweet flavor. They also usually have a more firm texture. Tomatoes tend to be sweeter and more soft in texture.
