About this Citrus Ginger Beer Mocktail recipe

I’ve always been a huge fan of ginger beer — it’s crisp, spicy and adds so much character to any drink. In cocktails, it’s famously used in the Moscow mule, where it adds a delicious zing.

This Citrus Ginger Beer Mocktail is one of my favorites because it balances that bold ginger kick with the bright, tangy flavors of three kinds of citrus: orange, lemon and lime.

The splash of non-alcoholic orange bitters takes it to the next level, adding depth and a touch of sophistication. It’s a refreshing drink that feels fancy but is so simple to make.

Whether you’re hosting friends, enjoying a challenge like Dry January or just treating yourself, this mocktail is guaranteed to impress!

Why you’ll love this recipe

It’s always a good idea to have a non-alcoholic mocktail recipe up your sleeve, and this one won’t disappoint.

  • This Ginger Beer Mocktail is easy to make at home.
  • Fresh citrus juice makes this drink over-the-top delicious.
  • You can customize the recipe as you need to — even using a less spicy ginger beer!

Tools & glassware

To make this Ginger Beer Mocktail, you’ll want to grab your citrus juicer and a sharp knife. (Fresh citrus really is the best!) You’ll also need a jigger for measuring out the ingredients.

A cocktail shaker is helpful too, but if you don’t have one you can use a mason jar or simply stir the ingredients together.

For serving the drink, you’ll want a rocks glass and some ice cubes. You could also use a Moscow mule mug if you prefer — this recipe is almost like a virgin Moscow mule!

Ingredients

You only need a few simple ingredients to make this recipe. Here’s what to grab at the grocery store:

I highly recommend using fresh fruit juices to make this drink, but it’s okay if you want to use the bottled concentrate or a high-quality juice.

Garnishes

Top the whole thing off with some citrus, of course! I used different kinds of dehydrated citrus — I love the sophisticated look but it’s so cheap and easy to make! I also added some fresh herbs from my garden, but that’s optional.

But if you just want to throw in a slice or wedge of fresh citrus fruits, that would be perfect too! I use a mandoline to cut even slices. A lemon twist (or twist of any kind of citrus peel) would be gorgeous too.

Best ginger beer

Ginger beer is a fizzy, non-alcoholic beverage made from fermented ginger. I prefer the flavor of a spicy ginger beer, which has more of a zing of ginger, but you can go sweeter here if you like.

Reed’s, Bundaberg and Goslings are some of my favorites, but there are so many to try! Check out my list of the best brands of ginger beer to help you decide on a spice level that’s right for you.

Substitutions & variations

Substitute ginger ale: Ginger ale is a ginger-flavored soda and is much sweeter than ginger beer. However, you can make this mocktail with ginger ale if you prefer or don’t have ginger beer. You may want to skip the simple syrup however!

Make it a cocktail: Add 2 ounces of your favorite spirit for a delicious cocktail. Vodka, rum, tequila, whiskey and gin would all be delicious (and quite different) so use your fave!

Try other citrus: If you want to use another kind of citrus, feel free! Grapefruit or blood orange would both bring a delightful twist to this drink. Just keep the total amount of citrus you use to about 1 to 1½ ounces.

Top with ginger beer and stir gently. To deepen the aroma, add a few dashes of orange bitters on top and garnish with fresh or dehydrated citrus slices. This helps your nose take in the smell of the cocktail as you sip, which adds to the flavor.

Tips & tricks

Here are some tips and tricks for making this recipe:

  • Use fresh citrus. I always recommend this if you can juice your own, but feel free to use a good quality orange juice or lemon and lime concentrate.
  • For extra fizz, chill your ginger beer beforehand and pour it gently to preserve the carbonation.
  • Adjust the simple syrup to taste if you prefer your drink sweeter or more tart. You can also experiment with milder or spicier ginger beers.

Food pairings

Ginger beer is always good with citrus! Try this drink with lemon drop cookies or margarita bars.

It would also be a great holiday or New Year’s Eve mocktail with some appetizers like a cheese & charcuterie board.

More ginger is always welcome too. Ginger ale cake or Moscow Mule cookies would be fantastic additions.

FAQ

What’s the best ginger beer to use?

Choose a ginger beer you enjoy drinking on its own — something with a bold, spicy kick will work beautifully in this mocktail.

Can I add alcohol to this mocktail?

Absolutely! Add a splash of vodka, rum, whiskey or tequila for a cocktail version, adjusting the recipe to taste.

Can I make this mocktail ahead of time?

You can pre-mix the citrus juices and simple syrup and store them in the refrigerator for up to a day. Add the ginger beer, bitters and garnish just before serving to keep it fresh and fizzy.
