Ingredients & equipment

These alcoholic drink pouches are a bit of a choose your own adventure. I’ll give you details on how I created mine (they were super delish) and some suggestions that I think would be great too.

The easiest combo is going to be lemonade or limeade and a spirit of your choice. Obviously store-bought is the quickest and easiest, but if you’re feeling ambitious you can always make your own. Homemade lemonade and limeade is simple with a good citrus juicer *. Grab your favorite spirit (rule of thumb is the best bottle you can afford for best results) and some herbs, as well as some fruit slices and you’re good to go!

No glassware needed here, I used these pouches and straws to create my alcoholic Capri Suns. The portable aspect and the fact that they’re disposable makes it perfect for a get-together. Don’t forget a funnel *, otherwise it gets a little messy when filling the pouches.

Flavor variations

Like I said before, these adult Capri Sun cocktails are a choose-your-own-adventure party treat — you can fill them with just about anything! Batch margaritas, mojitos, sangria, punch, jungle juice… the options are almost unlimited! Cocktails with a 2:1:1 ratio work well and come together quickly, and these easy mocktails are another option that satisfies guests of all ages.

For my alcoholic drink pouches, I did variations on the basic vodka lemonade recipe with different spirits and flavored lemonades — so easy and tasty. I used various flavors of the Simply Lemonade brand, but any brand will work. My flavors were:

  • vodka + plain lemonade with mint leaves + lemon slices
  • tequila + limeade with lime slices
  • rum + mango lemonade with mint leaves
  • bourbon whiskey + peach lemonade with peach slices
  • gin + strawberry lemonade with basil leaves
  • rum + blueberry lemonade with blueberries

If you want your cocktail pouch sweeter, like their lunchroom counterpart, reduce the lemonade a little and add ½ to 1 ounce of simple syrup or triple sec to taste.

Instructions

First, label your pouches using a permanent marker. This is helpful if you have different varieties and necessary if some are alcoholic and some are not.

Next, place your funnel * into a pouch. Combine your lemonade and spirit, along with any fruits or herbs, in the pouch and remove your funnel, no need to stir.

Finally, seal your pouch and refrigerate until you’re ready to serve. Don’t forget the straws! (Add them just before sipping, though.)

Repeat these steps for the remaining pouches until you have enough to share.

Tips & tricks

  • Leave about ½–1 inch of room so you don’t overfill them.
  • If you will have kids in attendance they will definitely want one of these, so make sure you fill some non-alcoholic ones and label them appropriately. Use a fruit punch or Kool-Aid to differentiate them from the grown-up colors, or serve them from a different cooler. You can write in Sharpie on the bottom if you don’t plan to reuse the bags.
  • Don’t use anything bubbly unless you’re able to add it when you open them to put in the straw.

FAQ

How do drink pouches work?

Drink pouches take the place of a cup or glass, making them perfectly portable! Simply fill with a funnel, add your liquid & fruit, if desired. Seal the pouch and refrigerate until you’re ready to enjoy. When serving, open the top slightly, insert a bendy straw, and use the holes in the pouch to anchor them. Bendy straws work better because they give you a bit more distance from the pouch when you sip, but a straight straw will work too.

Are drink pouches reusable?

Yes, you can reuse your drink pouches if they aren’t punctured and the zips still work. Just wash them out well and let them dry completely.
