About this Virgin Sangria Recipe

This recipe for virgin sangria is based on my classic red wine sangria. Most non-alcoholic sangria recipes use grape juice or cranberry juice, or even non-alcoholic wine. I found that I didn’t like them as much — just one of these on their own is nice to sip, but the beauty of sangria is the melding of flavors from wine and fruit.

Instead, I came up with a recipe that uses a mix of cranberry juice and pomegranate juice! Pomegranate juice is deeper in flavor and has more of the dry red wine vibe. Many sangrias use orange liqueur like triple sec for extra sweetness and flavor, so a splash of orange juice does the trick. I also added some flavored simple syrup to deepen the taste and notes of this faux-wine cocktail.

The result of using this tasty fruit juice is a mocktail that’s more of a true match for sangria, rather than just another boring fruit punch. I love to have party recipes like this one on hand for Dry January, Sober October, and really just any occasion where I know some non-alcoholic beverages will be appreciated.

My classic sangria is one of my specialties that everyone seems to enjoy! So I was determined to make a mocktail version that still did justice to all the amazing flavors. I’m confident that this easy non-alcoholic sangria recipe fits the bill! I hope you love it.

Why you’ll love this recipe

This is an easy to love mocktail recipe:

  • This is a great recipe to make ahead of time since it needs to chill for the best flavor anyway. An easy way to get some of the prep work done for a party.
  • Sangria is such a simple way to serve a lot of guests. Instead of making single cocktails one at a time, everyone can serve themselves from the pitcher or punch bowl.
  • I love to make this for parties so that everyone has something to drink. The designated drivers, pregnant mommas and those avoiding alcohol always appreciate a tasty beverage that isn’t soda!

Tools & glassware

To make this virgin sangria you will need some measuring cups, a large spoon, and either a large pitcher or a punch bowl. Make sure that you also have a cutting board and a sharp knife to prepare the oranges and apples.

If you are making the simple syrup from scratch, then make sure that you have a saucepan and a whisk on hand.

You will also need glasses for your sangria! I like stemless wine glasses for parties because don’t break as easily. For easy cleanup, use disposable wine glasses or cups.

Ingredients

Make some virgin sangria using these few simple ingredients:

Substitutions & variations

Virgin white sangria: You can make a white wine-esque version with white grape juice and lemon juice. Just play around with the amounts of each ingredient until it tastes perfect!

Alcohol-free wine sangria: The juices are easy to find, and they taste really good together — almost like wine. Feel free to use an alcohol-removed red wine in place of the juices if you’d like.

Bubbles: Ginger ale adds the tastiest flavor, in my opinion, but you can use sparkling water, ginger beer or lemon-lime soda in this sangria too. The bubbles are optional, but the extra liquid helps to stretch the sangria into a few more servings.

What to add to sangria

There are lots of different add-ins that are so tasty for sangria. Just be sure to make sure to fill your pitcher about one-third with fruit, so the rest is balanced out with liquid. Add anything else you’d enjoy, such as:

  • other fresh fruit, for flavor and visual interest: pomegranate seeds, lemon slices, red apple, sliced pear, fresh blueberries or strawberries
  • herbs, for garnish: sprigs of fresh rosemary, mint, thyme or even basil
  • frozen fruit, to keep it cold: frozen cranberries, blueberries or raspberries (or even berry ice cubes)

Tips & tricks

These simple tips and tricks will ensure this fruity beverage turns out extra tasty:

  • To keep your sangria mocktails cold, chill the wine glasses before serving. And make sure that the sangria mixture is cold as well.
  • If you’d like your sangria to be sweeter, they can use more cranberry juice or substitute grape juice. You can also add a little bit more simple syrup into the mix.
  • Wash the fruit well before slicing and dicing to add to the pitcher of non-alcoholic sangria.

Food pairings

Sangria is the perfect pairing for a charcuterie board or cheese board! You can also serve it with some bruschetta on crostini. Other cheesy appetizers like whipped feta dip and marinated cheese are perfect pairings.

This is even a great mocktail to serve with snacks like Chex mix and crispy air fryer mozzarella sticks.
