Your ultimate guide to aesthetic drinks
As a middle millennial, I have reached the age where I am starting to have to Google all the new cool lingo the kids are using. It all started when my coworkers started playing the game Among Us and using the word “sus” instead of “suspicious…” But “Sus” is what my family calls me — it’s short for my name, Susannah! (Luckily they’re pronounced differently, “suss” vs. “sooz,” respectively).
Another new one for me is everyone saying “aesthetic” on social media. I knew the traditional meaning for style, which is that something might have a “tiki bar aesthetic,” for example. But according to the videos I see on TikTok, now it’s often used as an adjective meaning pretty or vibe-y. You might hear someone say, “that’s an aesthetic cocktail” when they’re served a beautifully garnished drink that fits the vibe.
Honestly, I get it and I can very much get behind the term. Photogenic, trendy and vibe-driven beverages are speaking my language! Think fancy cocktails, yes, but non-alcoholic drinks too: mocktails, layered coffees and boba tea, pretty smoothies and so on.
Then there’s the noun, “aesthetic,” referring to an overall vibe. (Or “scene,” as we said on MySpace in my day.) For example, “minimalist drink aesthetic” might just include a classic dirty martini or simple tea drink. It’s a really fun way to think about style and incorporating it into every aspect of your life.

Quick tips for making aesthetic drinks
A drink should always taste good, but an aesthetic drink should look as good as it tastes. It all comes down to glassware and garnishes, but sometimes also technique and specialty ingredients.
Glassware matters. If you’re new here, you’ll know I am all about the glassware! Serving drinks in mason jars or coffee tumblers gives them a rustic aesthetic, while coupe glasses * and martini glasses * give elegance.
Color is everything. Treat the eyes when you taste the rainbow. You can get color-changing effects from butterfly pea syrup or use ice and ingredients to make beautifully striped or layered drinks. Pretty pastel lattes, vibrant juices, edible glitter and whipped toppings like cold foam can also add visual appeal.
Learn the techniques. To get some of these special effects, you have to learn some of basic bartending tricks, like making a lemon twist or adding a “float,” or layer, of liqueur over a bar spoon *, à la the Baby Guinness shot.
Don’t skip the garnish. Edible flowers, fruit wheels, sprinkles, fancy straws, rim sugar — we’re talking anything extra. If you want some more inspiration, we pulled together 250+ cocktail garnishes to make your drinks really sparkle.
Popular drink aesthetics
Match your drink aesthetic to whatever vibe you’re going for or however you’re feeling that day. Aesthetic drinks are often part of a bigger “experience” — think a café setting, a themed party or a cozy night in. Some ideas:
- Minimalist aesthetic: Think glassware with clean lines, neutral tones or crystal-clear ice. No fussy garnish, either. Classic drinks like an old-fashioned or a simple gin & tonic are perfect examples.
- Cottagecore aesthetic: We’re talking herbal teas, floral flavors and naturally-sweetened drinks like a lavender latte or some floral ice cubes.
- Cozy aesthetic: These are giving warm hygge vibes that make you want to cozy up under a blanket by the fire, like pretty latte art, chai tea or hot cocoa with whipped cream.
- Tropical aesthetic — Get inspiration from your a tiki bar, like a Zombie with a skull garnish, pineapple fronds in a pineapple margarita or some creative tiki mugs.
- Moody or gothic aesthetic: This is where those Halloween cocktails come in. These could be dark or black cocktails, charcoal lattes, espresso drinks or smoking dry ice cocktails.
- Retro or vintage aesthetic: This one’s my favorite. We’re talking mint green grasshopper martinis and sparkling French 75s, ideally styled in midcentury barware.
What to serve with aesthetic drinks
Aesthetic drinks aren’t just about what’s in the glass — they’re part of a bigger experience. Picture a glittery punch bowl * at a themed party, a moody espresso martini sipped during a cozy night in or a pastel mocktail served alongside a beautiful grazing board and pretty desserts.
The setting, presentation and even the mood you want to create all add to the vibe. That’s the fun of aesthetic drinks — they’re delicious, photogenic and help turn any gathering into a memorable moment.
Would you like to save this?
But the food needs to match the moment, too, so plan some small bites that match the vibe:
- charcuterie cups with wine spritzers or whiskey
- chocolate-covered strawberries with champagne cocktails
- queso fundido with margaritas and Palomas
- snowflake sugar cookies with holiday drinks and cozy lattes
- macarons in pastel colors with floral lemonades and gin cocktails
