Your ultimate guide to “Wicked” drinks
It’s hard to deny the spell “The Wizard of Oz” has cast over the world for more than 125 years. From Frank L. Baum’s 1900 novel to the beloved 1939 Judy Garland film, people have been over the rainbow for this story.
But few adaptations have inspired as much passion as the “Wicked” franchise. Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel reimagined the witches’ backstory, leading to the Tony Award-winning 2003 Broadway musical starring Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel. Now, with the 2024 two-part film adaptation starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, another generation is falling in love with Oz — just in time for its quasquicentennial in 2025.
I’ve loved “Wicked” ever since high school. Seeing it at the Gershwin Theatre on a 2005 school trip made it unforgettable, and I played the soundtrack on repeat. It’s thrilling to see this story still so popuuular.
I put together this guide of brightly-hued pink and green drinks to help you plan your “Wicked”-inspired Halloween fêtes, watch parties or any celebration that has you dancing through life. The cocktails and mocktails below are equal parts sweet and strong — just like our favorite witches. Channel your inner Elphaba with bold, herbaceous flavors and deep green hues, or even witchy black drinks with black vodka. For those feeling more glittery Glinda, something bubbly and pink fits the bill.

Quick tips for witchy drinks
- Jazz things up with glassware. Green and pink hues are enough to make these drinks stand out, but you can always elevate them with unique glassware. An elegant coupe glass or champagne flute is perfect for the pink drinks, while you might go for something more wicked like pumpkin glasses * or skeleton wine glasses * for the green and black ones.
- Serve a big batch for parties: When you’ve got a room full of guests, make drinks in big batches so you can mingle and not play bartender all night! Instead of making drinks to order in one shaker, make a pitcher drink that’s already batched, like this pink jingle juice, or multiply the ingredients of any recipe for a single drink. One caveat: Wait to add anything bubbly until just before you serve it to keep it crisp and fizzy.
- Always offer a mocktail! Not everyone drinks alcohol, so be sure to serve a drink that’s popular with both kinds of drinkers. This way, the designated drivers, those under 21 and anyone who simply doesn’t want to imbibe have something other than water to enjoy. Ideas for both cocktails and mocktails below!
If you want to take things up a notch, add edible glitter to your pink drinks and serve the green and black ones with dry ice with “smoke” that’ll defy gravity (but be sure to read up on how to use dry ice safely).
Wickedly good food pairings
No good drink goes unpaired — especially with a matching snack! Green and pink snacks should be on the menu along with any “Wicked”-inspired cocktails and mocktails. Think green guacamole and jalapeño poppers and bright pink Oreos and strawberry rice krispie treats.
You could also put together a pink and green charcuterie board with stuffed green olives and pickles for Elphaba and pink prosciutto and berries for Glinda.
