Oh, Cinco de Mayo. One of my favorite Americanized holidays, if not my favorite. Real or not, it’s nice to have another excuse to eat tacos and drink margaritas. (As if I really needed one…) But I don’t think that tequila and cerveza are the only beverages for this holiday.
What about some sangria? Soak some berries in a mixture of wine, vodka and a spot of juice and you’ve got Sangria Fresca. It’s a pitcher drink fit for any summer celebration, whether it’s Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day or a nice backyard barbecue.
Throughout May, I’m going to be sharing vodka recipes for my Kindred Spirits series. Vodka is a relatively flavorless spirit, which makes it a key component for many beverages that star other flavors. Vodka is more of a supporting actress, so to speak.
Vodka makes for a nice little kick in this Sangria Fresca. I poured a bottle of rosé wine into a pitcher and added cranberry juice and fresh raspberries, strawberries and blackberries. I let it soak for a little while, then added vodka and ice before serving. I topped off each glass with club soda for a bit of sparkle and a sprig of fresh mint for looks. This is a sangria that’s sweet and light. And you would be remiss to leave it out of your Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Salud! // susannah
