Rum & Coke Gummies recipe

One of my most popular recipes is my drunken gummy bears. These booze-soaked gummy candies are a fun-filled, fruity treat.

I originally made them for a friend’s bachelorette party, but since then I have enjoyed trying this recipe with other flavors of booze and types of candy.

There’s the vodka gummy worms, which are so silly and eery for Halloween. Then there’s the champagne gummy bears which work well for New Year’s Eve or any celebratory event.

In the summer, I also love the rosé gummy bears, which are boozy bears soaked in rosé wine.

Last summer I made whiskey & coke gummies with Haribo’s Happy Cola gummies and fell in love.

I made this fun treat with rum this time, to taste like a rum & coke cocktail, and they would be great for your next party.

What are cola gummies?

Cola gummies are a type of soda-bottle-shaped gummy candy that taste like soda.

If you are a fan of Coca-Cola or Pepsi, you will find the flavor is very similar. The texture of these gummies is also familiar, as if they were gummy bears without the bear shape.

These candies are made with cola extract and a pinch of citric acid, which gives these Coca-Cola gummies a hint of pleasant lime flavor.

Where to buy cola gummies

The Haribo-brand cola gummy bears, which are shaped like cola bottles, can be found at most grocery stores in the candy aisle.

If they’re not at your grocery store, try a big-box store like Wal-Mart or Target. A specialty candy shop or shop with international goodies might have them too.

I have also seen them at Cost Plus World Market which tends to carry a lot of styles of these German candies. They are also available on Amazon.

You could an also try making your own cola gummies with this tutorial, though I haven’t tested that method with a booze infusion.

Best rum for rum & coke gummies

You can use your favorite kind of rum for your rum-soaked cola gummies. Check out my crash course on rum, Rum 101, for tips on choosing a bottle.

White rum, aged rum or spiced rum are all great choices to turn this popular cocktail into a fun treat.

Fans of the Cuba Libre (a rum and coke with lime), will be glad to know these gummies already have a hint of lime, thanks to the citric acid added to the gummies. If you want to call them Cuba Libre gummies, I won’t stop you!

If you’re a Bacardi & Coke fan, you could make these with their silver rum to make Bacardi & Coke gummies. (I always have that on hand for Bacardi hurricanes anyway.)

I used my homemade spiced rum for my cola gummies this time and the great scent of rum was strong and full of tropical flavor. The result was very similar to a Captain & Coke, so I suppose we could call them Captain & Coke gummies.

Pineapple rum or coconut rum could also be good, though I haven’t tried either!

Alcohol-infused cola gummies

You don’t have to use rum! Feel free to make your cola gummies your own with different flavors of alcohol.

  • Add whiskey to make whiskey and coke gummies.
  • Use gin to make gin and coke gummies.
  • Try vodka to make them taste like vodka and coke gummies.
  • Go for tequila for tequila and coke gummies.

How to make Rum & Coke Gummies

If you’ve never had boozy gummy bears, they are simply gummy bears soaked in alcohol. The gummy bears soak up the booze and become similar to jell-o shots.

Alcohol-soaked gummies of all shapes and sizes are super easy to make.

  1. To make these whiskey and coke gummies, simply toss your gummies into a glass bowl or jar.
  2. Top with your favorite booze.
  3. Cover with a lid or plastic wrap.*
  4. Wait a day or two until the alcohol has been soaked up by the gummies.
  5. Voilà!

Also… I am obsessed with my ChicWrap plastic wrap. The refillable box is so cute on my counter, but I also love how easy it is to get the plastic wrap out one-handed without it tangling.

How long to soak gummies in alcohol

This really comes down to personal preference. I have had some readers comment that they prefer just a few hours to have a sturdier gummy with more chew.

I recommend a minimum of 6-8 hours of infusion time, as they won’t soak up enough alcohol or be boozy enough for my liking. I find they have a perfectly tender chew, but the choice is yours.

At the most, you’ll want to soak your alcoholic gummy bears for around 48 hours. Otherwise, the gummies will begin to break down and dissolve into a big slushy mess with a strong flavor of alcohol. They will also start to lose their shapes and details.

I recommend stirring your boozy gummies once or twice a day during the soak time so they don’t stick together. Taste one or two so you have an idea of how the texture is progressing.

How to eat infused gummies

The gummies get bloated and puffy when they soak up the alcohol — all the better for a boozy treat.

They will be sticky, so serve them with a spoon or toothpicks! (Although, I find spoons to be a bit safer than toothpicks when alcohol is involved…)
