Your ultimate guide to retirement party drinks

After the flurry of big birthdays, graduations, weddings and baby showers, life’s big milestone moments can start to feel few and far between. Until you retire, that is — because that chapter of life deserves a party all its own!

Whether you’re hosting a full party for a retiring friend, coworker or family member, or just serving up an intimate toast at home, a good drink makes this monumental celebration even more special.

For a retirement celebration, you want beverages that feel as festive as the occasion. Think sparkling champagne margaritas, fruity sangrias you can prep the night before and gorgeous mocktails so absolutely everyone has something beautiful to raise during the big toast.

And don’t let “retirement” fool you — these career-themed picks work just as well for promotions or new job celebrations. Toasting someone’s next chapter doesn’t have to mean they’re leaving the workforce altogether.

Quick tips for hosting a retirement celebration

Planning a party? Here’s my number-one tip: Skip the cocktail shaker * and go big-batch. A milestone like this deserves drinks that feel special and celebratory — not a host who’s stuck mixing individual cocktails all night instead of mingling with the crowd.

That’s why I always build my party drink menu around pitchers, punches and make-ahead sippers that look incredibly fancy but are secretly a breeze to pull off. Here are all my tips for batching cocktails from a single recipe.

And if you’ll have non-drinkers in attendance, grab a zero-proof spirit to swap in for the alcohol. A drink station is a great idea too — then everyone can build their own drink so you don’t have to play bartender all night.

How to pick a signature drink

Whether you’re throwing a laid-back backyard cookout or an elegant evening soirée, these are the tried-and-true recipes I’d recommend — each one suited for different types of careers to help you brainstorm!

If none of these make sense for your retiree, whip up their favorite cocktail and serve it big-batch style, then name the signature drink after them. Match a drink to a quirk of their job, say, a sidecar for the salesperson who spent a lot of time in their car, or a vesper martini for the 007-level assistant who could always hunt down just what you need!

You could also spin the drink choice to something they plan to do in retirement — maybe a fish bowl cocktail for the cruise-bound or a honey deuce if they’ll be picking up more tennis matches.
