Why You’ll Love this Recipe

I think my list of reasons to love breadsticks is endless! But here’s a few reasons why I love this recipe:

  • You can adapt and change this recipe as much as you want. Cheesy toppings, garlic butter, herbs, flaky salt — add anything you want!
  • Make these pizza dough breadsticks in just 15 minutes. Yes, it really is that easy and quick.
  • These breadsticks are great to serve as an appetizer, side dish, snack and so much more. Perfect for parties too!

Tools & equipment

If you are making the homemade dough, then you’ll need a stand mixer with a dough hook, a food processor and some plastic wrap or a zip top plastic bag. You’ll also need measuring cups or a kitchen scale!

To bake these breadsticks, you will need a baking sheet and parchment paper. Make sure that you have a rolling pin, pastry cutter (or pizza cutter) and a pastry brush to prepare the breadsticks.

Variations & subsitutions

While I highly recommend using homemade pizza dough, you can use store-bought dough if that is all that you have on hand, or all you have time for.

Make these cheesy with some parmesan cheese or mozzarella cheese sprinkled over the top.

Fresh herbs and dried herbs are a tasty way to season these pizza dough breadsticks! A tasty pizza seasoning is a good swap for Italian seasoning if needed. Regular ol’ dried basil or dried oregano is great too!

For added flavor, make a melted butter mixture to brush over the baked breadsticks. You can use salted or unsalted butter.

Instructions

Follow these step-by-step instructions to make the best breadsticks ever:

Preheat your oven to 400°F (20°C) and then line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone liner.

Turn out the pizza dough onto a light floured surface and then roll it out to an 8×12-inch rectangle.

Thin drizzle with olive oil and minced garlic, then use your fingers or a pastry brush to spread it out over the dough. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning and any other seasonings you want.

With a pizza cutter or pastry cutter, cut into 1-inch slices across the short end of the rectangle. Transfer to the previously prepared baking sheet, leaving an inch of space between the strips.

Bake the breadsticks for 10-12 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm and enjoy!

Tips & tricks

Isn’t it awesome that you can make pizza and breadsticks from the same recipe? Here’s a few tips and tricks to ensure the breadsticks turn out perfect:

  • If you have a lot of dough, you can bake the breadsticks in batches. Don’t overload your baking sheet or they sticks may bake together as they spread.
  • Don’t have a pizza cutter or pasty cutter? A sharp knife will also work to cut the dough into slices.
  • Make sure you don’t roll the dough out too thin. Once you reach that 8×12-inch rectangle, slice and bake!

Food & drink Pairings

These pizza dough breadsticks are best served with some kind of dipping sauce. A simple marinara sauce or pizza sauce is great, but something cheesy like spinach artichoke dip would be great too. Whipped feta dip or Italian hummus and breadsticks are always tasty too.

Serve this appetizer with Italian cocktails like a negroni, Italian margarita or prosecco punch.

Breadsticks go great as a side dish with other Italian dishes like baked eggplant parmesan or a comforting bowl of spaghetti soup.
