Your ultimate guide to cocktail party appetizers

Although cocktails tend to steal the show at a cocktail party (it’s right there in the name, after all), you don’t want to overlook the food!

Appetizers are the unsung heroes of any celebration. Together, they’re strong enough to feed a crowd; on their own, they are a wonderful complement to the meal itself. They’re a must to keep guests going, especially when cocktails are involved.

You want to consider which recipes can be made ahead, so you’re at the party and not stuck in the kitchen. Luckily a lot of these appetizers fit the bill! This list covers it all: what to serve, how to plan ahead and how to pull off a cocktail party spread without stress. Let’s go!

Quick tips for hosting

You can’t anticipate everything when you’re hosting, but you can certainly do things to make things easier on yourself!

Mix it up. Choose both hot and cold appetizers for your menu. That way, guests have options and you don’t have to stress about keeping everything the same temperature. It’s hard to juggle space in the oven if everything needs to warm up, and cold appetizers can be pulled out of the fridge anytime you need them.

Don’t overlook diets. I like to provide at least one vegetarian option in my spread so I know everyone can indulge. I also try to offer a gluten free choice for the same reason. The variety is especially helpful if you don’t know your guests’ dietary restrictions and want to be prepared.

Plan ahead. Much like cocktails, you’ll want to do any prep work possible ahead of time. The more you have prepared, the less stressed you’ll be! Some of these recipes also need time to chill or cook, so be sure to read the instructions to ensure everything will be ready to enjoy on time.

Quantity matters. If appetizers are the only food you’ll be serving, you’ll need more than if they’re just a teaser for the main course. I’d estimate at least 8-10 appetizers per person, but I’m more comfortable having too much rather than not enough.

Food & drink pairings

If you’re opting for a drink on the sweeter side, salty appetizers can provide a balance that’s so welcome. Think things with ingredients like nuts, cheese or olives to get you started. If you’ve got a bitter or spirit-forward sip on the menu, you may want something to mellow it, like crackers, breads or dip.

Then there are the apps that go with almost anything! You know them, you love them — the chips and salsa, charcuterie boards or cheese balls. When in doubt, these crowd-pleasers are just the thing!

No matter what you choose, creating your cocktail as a batch is the best option. You can either opt for something that’s already made to serve a crowd or multiply your favorite recipe. One thing to remember is that you want to wait when it comes to ice and anything bubbly. Adding these too soon will give you a watered down, flat drink that’s hard to enjoy.

The best cocktail party appetizers

No matter what kind of celebration you’re hosting, one of these snacks is sure to satisfy!

Cocktail Party Dips and Spreads

Whether you’re setting out a full spread or just a few things to snack on, a good dip does the heavy lifting. These are easy to make in big batches and keep guests coming back.

1

Beer Cheese Dip
Sharp cheddar, cream cheese and a splash of beer come together in a warm, smoky dip that disappears fast at any gathering. It pairs well with soft pretzels, crackers or crusty bread, and the recipe scales easily if the crowd is large. Set it out with a few dipping options and it takes care of itself.

2
A bowl of Whipped Feta Dip with olives and pita bread.
Whipped Feta Dip
Tangy feta whipped until silky and smooth makes for a dip that feels a little more special than the usual options. It takes only a few minutes to make and can be prepped a day ahead, leaving less to do the day of the party. Serve it with homemade pita chips, sliced vegetables or crackers alongside.

A creamy spinach dip is spooned out of a blue baking dish.
Spinach Artichoke Dip
The classic spinach artichoke dip earns its place on every party table for good reason — it’s warm, cheesy and reliably gone within the hour. This version is rich without being heavy, with just enough artichoke bite to keep it interesting. A basket of sturdy dippers keeps things easy for guests who are eating one-handed.

4
A bowl of guacamole and tortilla chips.
Guacamole
Fresh, well-seasoned guacamole is one of the easiest things to scale up for a party and one of the first things to go. A big bowl set out with sturdy tortilla chips keeps guests happy while the rest of the spread comes together. Make it an hour ahead and press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to keep it bright and green until go-time.

5
A bowl of chips and halves of spent limes sit near two bowls of pineapple-based salsa.
Cilantro Pineapple Salsa
Swap the usual jar of tomato salsa for something more elegant and unexpected. Sweet pineapple, fresh cilantro and a hit of lime give this salsa a bright, tropical flavor that pairs especially well with something bubbly or a tequila-based cocktail. It’s a lively change of pace from a classic tomato salsa and works just as well with chips as it does spooned over something from the table.

A cheese ball covered in bacon and green onions is placed on a white plate surrounded by circular crackers.
Bacon Ranch Cheese Ball
A bacon ranch cheese ball is one of those appetizers that always gets more attention than expected. It’s made ahead, keeps well in the fridge and only needs to be set out with crackers or bread when guests arrive. The cream cheese base is tangy and herb-flecked, with crispy bacon coating every bite.

Charcuterie Board Essentials

A great board is built in layers — start with a base of meats and cheeses, then fill in with bites that add texture, sweetness and a little drama. These recipes all earn a spot.

Cheese and Charcuterie Board
A well-built charcuterie board anchors any cocktail party spread and does most of the work on its own. Guests graze as they mingle, so the board keeps giving all night and it's easy to replenish. Layer in a mix of hard and soft cheeses, cured meats and a few sweet or briny accents for balance. They always look impressive and require almost no cooking.

Charcuterie Cups
Individual charcuterie cups solve one of the trickiest party problems: how to serve a board to a group without the awkward reach-and-hover. Each cup holds a handful of meats, cheeses and accompaniments, so guests can grab one and keep their other hand free for their drink. They come together quickly and can be assembled (or partially assembled) hours ahead.

baked brie and crackers on a plate
Baked Brie with Honey, Bacon and Walnuts
Warm brie topped with crispy bacon, toasted walnuts and a drizzle of honey hits every note at once — rich, salty, sweet and a little crunchy. It goes from oven to table in about 20 minutes and looks far more involved than it actually is. Set it out with sliced baguette or crackers and let guests serve themselves.

Cheese Straws
Buttery, crispy and just a little spicy, cheese straws are the kind of snack that disappears before the party really gets started. They have an optional kick of spice that adds just enough heat to make them interesting without overwhelming the other flavors on the table. A big batch of this Southern recipe keeps well, so they’re easy to make a day or two ahead. You can even bag or jar them and send guests home with an edible memory of the night.
