It’s candy season! While I don’t mind slipping my hand into the Halloween candy bowl once in a while, I am usually a candy hoarder and I save my treats for dessert.

Exhibit A: This butterscotch skillet cookie made with Butterfinger.

Exhibit B: These kitchen sink cookies with M&M’s and other candies.

And Exhibit C, if you weren’t convinced: This chocolate peanut butter whiskey milkshake.

Of course, this is assuming drinks can be dessert. But, can’t they?

I love dessert drinks year-round, from the s’mores White Russian in the summer to the sugar cookie martini at the holidays.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Whiskey Milkshake recipe

This boozy milkshake is a delicious dessert cocktail after a good meal.

Made with vanilla or chocolate ice cream, chocolate liqueur, peanut butter whiskey and milk, this milkshake is like a peanut butter cup in a glass.

Or WITH. I used to frequent a restaurant in Raleigh that offered boozy milkshakes alongside juicy burgers and the most luscious salty fries.

One of my favorites was the chocolate peanut butter milkshake. They used coffee liqueur to make the milkshake boozy and added extra peanut butter to chocolate ice cream. The savory flavor of peanut butter goes so perfectly with chocolate! It was the perfect summer milkshake recipe.

it was a huge bummer when that place closed, and now I have to make my own boozy milkshakes at home. But a plus?

Now there’s peanut butter whiskey, a relatively new-to-market product. The addition of Skrewball whiskey is exactly what that milkshake needed.

What is peanut butter whiskey?

Peanut butter whiskey is really game-changing for peanut butter lovers.

It’s a sweet flavored whiskey. People who love bourbon and peanut butter will probably love this inventive spirit.

That said, it is sweet and has added flavor, so it’s not a pure whiskey, and purists may not be fans.

Me? I think peanut butter whiskey is good on its own. But mixed into delicious peanut butter whiskey drink recipes? It’s insanely good.

Try it in this chocolate peanut butter old fashioned cocktail or a peanut butter jelly cocktail, which is just like the childhood-favorite sandwich.

Ingredients

The best peanut butter whiskey

My preference is to use Skrewball peanut butter whiskey for a boozy peanut butter milkshake or cocktail. It’s got the most whiskey flavor, while still brings in the sweet flavors of PB.

My husband brought home a bottle a while back, and we feel in love. Now we’ve tried several brands of peanut butter whiskey:

  • Ole Smoky Peanut Butter Whiskey is a close second for us. It has notes of buttered popcorn and honey as well as creamy PB.
  • PB&W Peanut Butter Whiskey is my least favorite of the bunch we tried. It is very sweet and doesn’t taste like whiskey to me. I’d probably enjoy it much better in a milkshake or other drink where it can take a backseat to other flavors.
  • Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey is my #1 favorite. It has a taste similar to a Butterfinger candy, but it still tastes like a sweet whiskey.

Some other notable brands are Scatterbrain, SQRRL, Sheep Dog and Hard Truth, which I hope to get around to trying one day soon!

Most liquor stores should carry peanut butter whiskey so you can make your own peanut butter whiskey drinks at home. Look for it near the flavored whiskeys.

Make it non-alcoholic: Use a zero-proof whiskey like Ritual whiskey alternative instead of the whiskey. Add 2 tablespoons of creamy peanut butter and 2 tablespoons of chocolate sauce to the blender when making the milkshake.

Ice cream

Use your favorite ice cream for this boozy shake! I used vanilla ice cream, but you can use chocolate ice cream if you like. Or you can use equal parts of both!

Peanut butter ice cream is also amazing if you want a stronger peanut butter flavor to go with the peanut butter whiskey.

Or! Use an ice cream that has peanut butter and chocolate flavors in it, like this peanut butter brownie ice cream.

You can even use non-dairy ice cream and your favorite non-dairy milk, if you like!

Milk

You’ll want to add a little bit of milk to help thin the thick ice cream. I recommend whole milk or 2%, but you can use your favorite milk. Non-dairy milk will also work, and I recommend that if you’re using lactose-free ice cream!

Chocolate liqueur

I brought in more booze and flavor by incorporating chocolate liqueur into this milkshake.

I used crème de cacao, which is very affordable, but you can also jazz it up with a fancier choice like Godiva Dark Chocolate Liqueur.

Coffee liqueur would also work if you don’t want to add another bottle to your bar just yet.

Whipped cream

Don’t forget the whipped cream! The stuff from the bottle will work just fine, or you can venture into the realm of homemade whipped cream.

If you like, you can even make a boozy whipped cream. Use peanut butter whiskey or chocolate liqueur and follow the directions for this Baileys whipped cream.

Peanut butter candy

Crumbles of peanut butter cups give this ice cream cocktail an extra wow factor. You can use any peanut butter candy that you like! Reese’s cups, Snickers and Butterfingers are all good options for fun milkshake toppings.

You could even use crumbled peanut butter cookies. My favorite are these peanut butter chocolate chip oatmeal cookies!

Melted peanut butter and chocolate sauce

Before I pour my shake into my milkshake glasses, I like to drizzle melted peanut butter and chocolate sauce into the glass for some extra pizzazz! It makes it feel fancy, too.

How to make a Chocolate Peanut Butter Whiskey Milkshake

First, melt a few spoonfuls of creamy peanut butter in a heat-proof bowl to make a peanut butter sauce.

Spoon ribbons of the melted peanut butter into a chilled glass. Drizzle chocolate fudge sauce around the glass too. (I love these milkshake glasses.)

Meanwhile, prepare the milkshake in the blender. Blend milk, ice cream, peanut butter whiskey and chocolate liqueur until blended.

Pour into the prepared glass, and top with whipped cream and peanut butter candies.

Add a straw or two and dig in to your alcoholic peanut butter chocolate milkshake!
