‘Tis the season to argue over the best and worst Halloween candy.

My votes for the best go to any candy with peanuts and chocolate. Snickers are at the top, with Reese’s peanut butter cups close behind.

(The worst? Anything with coconut. You can keep your Almond Joys and Mounds, please and thank you.)

For all my fellow chocolate peanut butter lovers, do I have the cocktail for you: a peanut butter cup old-fashioned cocktail.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Old-Fashioned Cocktail

This is a dessert cocktail that tastes like a peanut butter cup.

Garnished with chocolate syrup and grated chocolate, this cocktail features peanut butter whiskey and several kinds of flavored bitters.

It’s much sweeter than a classic old-fashioned cocktail.

I think it would be best enjoyed after dinner, perhaps alongside a slice of no bake peanut butter pie or a scoop of peanut butter brownie ice cream.

Peanut butter whiskey cocktail

Peanut butter whiskey is really game-changing for peanut butter lovers.

My husband brought home a bottle from a liquor store run a while back, and now we’ve tried several brands of peanut butter whiskey:

  • Ole Smoky Peanut Butter Whiskey is a close second for us. It has notes of buttered popcorn and honey as well as creamy PB.
  • PB&W Peanut Butter Whiskey is my least favorite of the bunch we tried. It is very sweet and doesn’t taste like whiskey to me. I’d probably enjoy it much better in a milkshake or other drink where it can take a backseat to other flavors.
  • Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey is my #1 favorite. It has a taste similar to a Butterfinger candy, but it still tastes like a sweet whiskey.

Some other notable brands are Scatterbrain, SQRRL, Sheep Dog and Hard Truth, which I hope to get around to trying one day soon!

Ingredients for a peanut butter old-fashioned

Get out a rocks glass and your ingredients to make this peanut butter cocktail! You only need a few ingredients:

Ice: Before you start, make sure you have a really big ice cube that you can use, if possible. Large ice cubes dilute slower, so they are less likely to change the flavor of your whiskey cocktail. I like this set of trays that makes cubes and spheres for all our whiskey cocktails. (A muffin tin works great in a pinch!)

Peanut butter whiskey: My preference is to use Skrewball brand whiskey for a peanut butter cocktail. It’s got the most whiskey flavor, while still brings in the sweet flavors of PB.

Bitters: Bitters bring balance to an old-fashioned cocktail. I used three kinds of bitters, but if you don’t have them on hand, you don’t need to go buying them all. You can still have a really delicious cocktail!

  • Chocolate bitters is the most important for providing the chocolate part of the peanut butter cup. It gives it a balance with the sweetness of the peanut butter whiskey. I like Scrappy’s chocolate bitters.
  • Coffee bitters gives it an even deeper, more espresso-like flavor, almost like dark chocolate. I used this coffee & chocolate bitters from Crude Bitters, but also love anything from El Guapo and they make a chicory pecan bitters that I must try soon.
  • Walnut bitters brings an extra layer of nutty flavor to the cocktail. Fee Brothers makes a black walnut bitters that comes in handy for many holiday cocktails.

Garnishes: Garnishes are optional, but they bring in more chocolate flavor and wow-factor.

  • Chocolate syrup: For the glass, I used chocolate syrup (the same kind you’d put on ice cream) and drizzled it around.
  • Chocolate shavings: Then, after I made the cocktail, I grated some dark chocolate on top of the cocktail. You can do as much or as little as you like. You can simply use a single chocolate chip! I used this Microplane zester.
  • Peanut butter cup: For extra pizzazz, a real peanut butter cup gives this cocktail a leg up. I cut a Pac-Man-shaped wedge into the cup so it would fit over the edge of the glass.

How to make a Skrewball old-fashioned

It takes just a few steps to make a chocolate peanut butter old-fashioned. It’s such an easy dessert cocktail!

  1. Take your rocks glass and hold it on its side. Using a spoon or the bottle if it has a pour spout, drizzle chocolate syrup around the inside wall of the glass, while rotating it. I “draw” a zig-zag shape first, then come back and do an opposite zig-zag to make a diamond pattern. This can take some practice, but it will still taste good no matter how you do it!
  2. Pour your peanut butter whiskey into the prepared glass. Be careful not to pour it on your chocolate drizzle — aim for the middle.
  3. Carefully lower in a large ice cube. This is purely for presentation — I do it in this order to keep the ice in tact. If you add the ice first, then pour on top, it may melt some of the cube and change its shape.
  4. Then add your bitters on top.

Top your drink with a sprinkle of chocolate shavings, a peanut butter cup or your favorite chocolate peanut butter candy. They’d also be great with peanut butter balls on a cocktail pick!

Other Skrewball cocktails

There’s more to peanut butter whiskey than an old-fashioned! Now that you have a bottle of it, you can try some other peanut butter cocktails. Here are a few ideas:

This peanut butter & jelly cocktail is just like the childhood sandwich.

An apple cider peanut butter cocktail sounds like my favorite healthy snack in a cocktail!

Lastly this Reese’s Cup dessert cocktail takes it up a whole other level with crème de cacao and heavy cream.
