Boozy Whipped Cream

Whipped cream makes everything better, doesn’t it?

Coffee, hot chocolate, cocktails, desserts, pancakes — it’s always better if you can add a dollop of whipped cream on top.

Can you make whipped cream better? YES! You can make it yourself. In fact, homemade whipped cream is even more decadent than the store-bought kind.

But what if it were a little boozy, too? Wouldn’t that be better? Now we’re talking!

Ingredients

Heavy cream or whipping cream

It’s important to use cream, not half-and-half or milk. Look for the pint that says “heavy cream” or “whipping cream” or it will just not come together and hold its shape.

Sugar

I prefer to use powdered sugar, but you can substitute granulated sugar or brown sugar. I always suggest tasting your whipped cream with a spoon after about 30 seconds to see if it tastes okay. Then you can add more sugar if you like and continue to whip.

Irish cream liqueur

Irish cream liqueur is a creamy liqueur made with flavors of chocolate, coffee and Irish whiskey.

However, you can use other creamy liqueurs like Rumchata or Amarula or even non-creamy spirits like coffee liqueur or cinnamon whiskey.

Types of Irish cream

Bailey’s is probably the most ubiquitous brand of Irish cream here in the States, but there lots of other brands out there. Here are some Irish Cream brands to look for:

  • Carolan’s
  • Kerrygold
  • St. Brendan’s
  • Kirkland (Costco brand)
  • Ryan’s
  • Emmets
  • Five Farms

I like to make my own homemade Irish cream, because it’s a bit stronger and it makes for a more flavorful punch, whether it’s served atop a hot beverage, on the rocks or on the side of a dessert such as these Guinness donuts.

Substitutions

Don’t substitute the heavy cream. Whipping cream is the same thing, but don’t use milk or half-and-half. (If you need a vegan version, check out this vegan whipped cream.)

You can use powdered sugar, brown sugar or granulated sugar in this whipped cream. Honey and maple syrup also would work.

Instead of Baileys, you can use other sweet liqueurs. For example, you could make this almond whipped cream with a splash of amaretto.

How to make Baileys whipped cream

To make whipped cream with Baileys, you will need first to make whipped cream.

Start with heavy whipping cream. Then mix the cream with sugar.

Next we whip it, whip it good. You will need to get out a mixer to whip it all together. You can use a hand mixer or stand mixer.

(If you want to whisk by hand, by all means, do it, but know that a mixer will cut the time by a lot!)

As you whip air into the cream, you will be increasing the volume, so make sure you’re using at least a medium-size bowl.

Typically with whipped cream, you would flavor it with a little vanilla extract. But since we’re making this whipped cream a little boozy, we’ll use Irish Cream liqueur.

How much alcohol goes in boozy whipped cream?

To make boozy whipped cream, you can stir in a little bit of any liqueur, like Baileys, amaretto, coffee liqueur or hazelnut liqueur.

For every 1 cup of whipping cream, add 1 ounce of liqueur. I suggest adding it ½ ounce at a time and tasting as you go to make sure it’s not too strong.

How to use Baileys whipped cream

Boozy whipped cream is perfect for scooping on top of drinks like traditional Irish coffee or an iced Irish coffee or even something more non-traditional like Baby Guinness Jell-O Shots.

spoon it over a dessert like chocolate bourbon pecan pie or red wine brownies

Add the boozy option alongside regular whipped cream to a hot cocoa bar at a hot chocolate party. It’s especially good with other kinds of spiked hot chocolate.
