Ordering at a coffee shop in the summer months always makes me laugh. The cashier almost always asks, “Do you want that hot or iced?”

I always answer, “Iced!” and then wonder to myself who is ordering a hot coffee when it’s 97 degrees out with a side of Carolina humidity.

In the summer months, I still enjoy a steaming cup of fresh-brewed coffee first thing in the morning, then if I need a pick-me-up later in the day, it’s got to be iced.

And this is true for coffee cocktails, as well. Irish coffee is always such a treat in the cold winter months (especially for St. Patrick’s Day), but its iced variation is just as welcome in the hot summer months.

What is Irish coffee?

Irish coffee is a wintertime treat of sweetened, hot coffee that’s spiked with Irish whiskey and topped with a thick layer of whipped cream.

You don’t stir Irish coffee; instead, you take a sip through the cream layer.

Ingredients

You don’t need a lot to make iced Irish coffee. Iced Irish coffee is just like iced coffee, but with Irish whiskey and a topping of whipped cream.

Coffee: I like to make cold-brew coffee and sweeten it with simple syrup. I recommend picking up a bag of coffee beans that are made for cold brewing.

You can also buy cold brew coffee that’s already brewed (usually in the refrigerated section of the grocery store). You can also use cold brew concentrate, and all you’ll need to do is add water to your desired strength.

Irish whiskey: Jameson is the most popular, but you can try other brands of Irish whiskey or even swap it for bourbon if you need to.

Whipped cream: Optional but worth it! You can use the canned stuff or make your own. Or use a boozy whipped cream. Baileys whipped cream is a silky and flavorful topping to any iced Irish coffee.

How to make Iced Irish coffee

Making this easy coffee cocktail is super simple! Here’s what to do:

  1. In a mixing glass, combine simple syrup, Irish whiskey and cold coffee. Stir.
  2. Pour coffee mixture into a glass filled with ice.
  3. Spoon whipped cream over top. If using heavy cream, pour it gently over the back of a spoon to form a thick layer.

You could also use coffee ice cubes to keep the coffee from becoming diluted as the ice melts.

Variations & substitutions

Hot Irish coffee: You can make this drink with hot coffee, too! This is the classic way.

Iced Irish coffee with Baileys: Just replace the Irish whiskey with your favorite Irish cream liqueur. (I love to make my own.)

Any way you make it, I know you’ll love it!
