Tools & equipment

To make this drink, you’ll need a few basic bar tools. Make sure you’ve got a cocktail shaker and jigger.

Ingredients

Here are all the ingredients that you need to make this creamy and smooth Chocolate Martini:

Garnishes

You can simply use chocolate shavings or even chocolate sprinkles in place of the chocolate curls!

Dipping the rim of each glass in chocolate syrup and then rolling in coarse sugar or some sprinkles would be great.

Some fresh whipped cream would be a delicious garnish on the top of the cocktail.

  • Irish cream liqueur (Make your own if you’re feeling frisky!)
  • crème de cacao
  • vodka
  • heavy cream
  • chocolate syrup
  • chocolate curls, for garnish
  • chocolate cookie stick, for garnish

Substitutions & variations

Chocolate liqueur vs. crème de cacao: You can sub chocolate liqueur. It’s different than crème de cacao — chocolate liqueur has cream in it, crème de cacao does not — but it will be creamier.

Dairy-free Chocolate Martini: Sub in other kinds of milk if you want to make this dairy free! And use Baileys Almande, which is- dairy-free Irish cream.

Milk substitutes: Half and half is a good substitute for heavy cream if need be. You can also use whole milk.

Caffeine boost: Add a shot of espresso for a fun twist on this Chocolate Martini recipe! You could also replace half of the Irish cream with Kahlua coffee liqueur.

Garnishes: For this drink, I swirled chocolate syrup around the inside of the glass for a pretty effect. (I’ll tell you how to do it in a moment!) I also sprinkled the top with chocolate curls and a chocolate cookie stick, but you can skip that if you want. You could even rim the glass with chocolate sprinkles or Oreo cookie crumbs.

Best vodka for a Chocolate Martini

You’ll need a smooth and clean vodka to pair with the sweet chocolate flavors and creamy texture of heavy cream. For extra chocolate flavor, use chocolate vodka! You can also use vanilla vodka for a fun flavor. To find the best brands and types of vodka, check out my vodka 101 post.

To decorate the glasses with chocolate syrup: Place the glasses in the freezer for about 10 minutes before you begin. Then hold the glass in one hand, rotating it as you drizzle chocolate syrup in a circular pattern around the inside of the glass.

Place back in the freezer for 5-10 minutes while you prepare the other ingredients.

Tips & tricks

Check out these few tips and tricks to make the best Chocolate Martini:

  • Shake well, but not too hard because you don’t want to whip the cream. But a good shake will make this martini thick and velvety.
  • Adjust the sweetness of your martini if needed. You can add some more chocolate syrup or even a simple syrup!
  • Don’t forget to freeze the glasses because it helps the chocolate syrup stick to the glass, rather than running down and puddling at the bottom. You can prep them ahead of time, too!

Food pairings

Pair this chocolatey cocktail with some sweet treats for a fun dessert. I love it with some cookies, like peanut butter oatmeal chocolate chip cookies or even with fresh madelines! For movie night, it’s delicious paired alongside puppy chow popcorn.

It’s the perfect cocktail to serve with cheesecake too! Or even make some dark chocolate truffles for Valentine’s Day.

FAQ

Are dessert martinis made with gin or vodka?

Traditional savory martinis can be made with either gin or vodka, and dry vermouth, too. Dessert martinis usually contain vodka and other sweet liqueurs, but typically no gin is involved.

Is crème de cacao the same as chocolate liqueur?

Crème de cacao is a type of chocolate-flavored liqueur, but the two aren’t exactly the same. Crème de cacao is a clear (or clarified) spirit while chocolate liqueur is a more thick and creamy.
