What is tiramisu?
Tiramisu is an elegant layered Italian dessert with coffee flavor is soaked into every bite.
Each layer is more delicate than the last: Espresso-soaked ladyfinger cookies soaked in marsala wine, rum, brandy or liqueur; sweet creamy mascarpone cream; and sprinkles of cocoa.
It makes for a show-stopping dessert that’s perfect year-round — dinner parties, Christmas dinner, Valentine’s Day or any other special occasion.
Cocktail Ingredients
There are four ingredients in this tasty Tiramisu Martini, plus ice. Here’s what you’ll need:
Brandy
The alcohol in tiramisu is classically Marsala wine, which is a Sicilian fortified wine.
However, you can also substitute brandy or dark rum in the dessert, and they also work in this tiramisu cocktail.
I chose brandy for this
Chocolate liqueur
Tiramisu gets a dusting of cocoa powder to top off each layer. Chocolate liqueur is what brings in that flavor into this
Crème de cacao is a sweet, chocolate-flavored liqueur. It comes in a clear version and a dark brown color. Either will work, but the dark version will help give this cocktail its tiramisu color.
You can also go for something more top-shelf like Godiva Chocolate Liqueur.
Coffee liqueur
In tiramisu, each ladyfinger cookie is soaked in espresso, so coffee liqueur brings the espresso element to this cocktail. It is one of my favorite liqueurs!
Kahlua and Tia Maria are two of the most well-known brands for coffee liqueur out there.
But if you’re up for a challenge, making homemade coffee liqueur is worth it. You can make it with your favorite coffee beans and vodka. (And it makes a great gift for the coffee lover in your life!)
Vanilla vodka
A splash of vanilla-flavored vodka brings in a hint of vanilla flavor, just like vanilla extract does in the creamy layers of tiramisu.
Heavy cream
For the dairy component of this delicious cocktail, you can use either heavy whipping cream or half-and-half.
Heavy cream would give your cocktail a thick texture and half-and-half would be a bit thinner but is still nice and creamy when shaken with the other ingredients.
Feel free to choose non-dairy milk such as oat milk, soy milk, coconut milk or almond milk if that’s more your speed.
Garnishes
For a garnish, you can layer a ladyfinger (also called savoiardi) on top of your martini glass. They’re great for dipping!
Another thing I like to do is garnish the glasses with chocolate syrup or chocolate sauce before pouring the cocktail in. It gives it a very professional look.
A little bit of grated chocolate or a pinch of unsweetened cocoa powder on the top of the cocktail also helps to dress up this
You could also add some whipped cream (or boozy whipped cream) or even tiramisu ice cream on top, or give the rim of chocolate sprinkles.
How to make a Tiramisu Martini
This tiramisu cocktail recipe is so simple to make. Grab a cocktail shaker and let’s get started!
- If you want to decorate your glasses with chocolate syrup, go ahead and prepare them first.
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the coffee liqueur, chocolate liqueur, brandy (or marsala wine or rum) and heavy cream.
- Cover and shake well. Then shake some more — the point here is to slightly whip the cream so that your cocktail winds up with an incredibly thick and silky texture.
- Pour into two martini glasses and garnish with chocolate flakes and ladyfinger cookies.
