Your ultimate guide to lemonade recipes

When it comes to making lemonade at home, gone is the powdered stuff of your childhood. Homemade lemonade is way easier than you think and most recipes only need a handful of ingredients.

Bright lemons can stand strong on their own — obviously, since it’s such an iconic sip — but they also form a great base to build on. Add other flavors to create a drink for whatever occasion comes up! From cookouts to baby showers to pool days, lemonade is made for fun in the sun.

Quick tips for making lemonade

When it comes to crafting lemonade at home, here are my top tips:

  1. Not all sweeteners are created equal. Many lemonade recipes call for cane sugar (or granulated sugar) to make a simple syrup, but you can also use honey, agave nectar *, maple syrup or brown sugar. Keep in mind that these other sweeteners will change the color of your finished drink — but will still taste great!
  2. What’s in the water? Ideally you should use filtered water for the freshest taste. If you have a water filter pitcher *, that will work well. Bottled water works too, but you absolutely can use tap water if needed.
  3. Fresh is best. Your flavor will be much better if you use real lemons — trust me. It takes a little extra time, but I promise the effort is worth it! If you really need to take a shortcut, look in your grocery store’s produce section and see if the grocery store sells fresh lemon juice. You can get the same taste with less effort, though the fresh-pressed juice will likely be more expensive than the concentrate. The same goes for any other fruits you’ll be incorporating. Use the freshest options you can find (I love shopping the farmers market).
  4. Have fun with lemons. Regular lemons will be perfectly juicy. Meyer lemons have a sweeter flavor than regular lemons, but they are still perfectly tart. No lemons? Limes work well too — we call it limeade!

Serving suggestions

Just because a drink errs on the simple side doesn’t mean it shouldn’t get dressed up! Reserve some lemon slices or pieces of fruit as you craft the drink to act as a garnish. If you wanted to get really fancy, dehydrated lemon slices will certainly take your drink to the next level. You could even use herb ice cubes to add an unexpected flavor while keeping things cool.

While lemonade is perfectly at home at a backyard bbq filled with burgers and hot dogs, it can go with almost anything. Pair it with something salty to compliment the sweet and sour, like a charcuterie board or even fried pickles! For a sweet bite, add skillet peach cobbler to the menu.

The best lemonade recipes

There's nothing quite like a pitcher of fresh-squeezed lemonade — and once you've made it from scratch, it's hard to go back. Whether you're after a classic or something more creative, a simple two-ingredient base or a fruit-forward version built on homemade syrups that take the whole thing to another level, there's a lemonade here worth making.

Fresh-squeezed lemon juice, sugar and cold water — Homemade Classic Lemonade is one of those recipes that sounds almost too simple until you taste the difference it makes over the store-bought stuff. Peach Lemonade
Ripe peaches and fresh lemon juice are a natural pairing — sweet and tart in exactly the right proportions, with a smooth, juicy flavor that tastes like the best of summer in a glass. Make it with peak-season peaches and you won't need much else. It's the kind of drink that disappears fast at a party, so make a double batch.

Blackberry Lemonade
Deep, jammy blackberries bring a rich berry flavor and a stunning jewel-toned color to homemade lemonade that plain citrus just can't compete with. A fresh blackberry syrup is the secret — it infuses every sip with concentrated fruit flavor that feels a little more special than your average summer drink. Set it out in a big pitcher and watch it disappear.

Blueberry Lemonade
Juicy blueberries and fresh lemon juice make a combination that's both beautiful and deeply refreshing — that soft purple hue alone is enough to make it the star of any drink table. A homemade blueberry syrup brings out the natural sweetness of the fruit without overpowering the bright citrus underneath. It's the kind of lemonade that makes people ask for the recipe before they've finished their first glass.

Fresh limeade recipes

Limeade doesn't get nearly enough credit. Bolder and more assertive than lemonade, fresh lime juice brings a tartness that stands up beautifully to herbs, fruit and simple syrup in ways that feel a little more unexpected. These three recipes are proof that lime deserves its own pitcher.

Classic Limeade
Fresh lime juice brings a bolder, more assertive tartness than lemon, and homemade Classic Limeade lets that flavor shine without anything to hide behind. A little sugar, a lot of ice and a good squeeze of fresh limes is genuinely all it takes. It's a great change of pace when you want something citrusy but a little different from the usual.

two glasses of herbal limeade with green straws and limes
Herbal Limeade
Inspired by a local Peruvian restaurant near me, this Herbal Limeade layers fresh lime juice with basil, mint or rosemary — or a combination of all three — for a drink that's aromatic, refreshing and just different enough to make people curious about what's in it. Once you have a jar in the fridge, you'll find excuses to drink it all week. It's the kind of drink that feels like something you'd order at a restaurant and then immediately try to recreate at home.

Cherry Limeade
Sweet cherries and fresh lime juice make a pairing that's tart, fruity and deeply refreshing — bright enough to feel like a proper summer drink, nostalgic enough to remind you of the cherry limeades you ordered as a kid. A homemade cherry syrup gives it a richness that store-bought versions can't touch. Serve it over crushed ice with a fresh cherry on top and it's practically a celebration in a glass.

Lemonade cocktails

When life gives you lemons, sometimes you add vodka. These lemonade-inspired cocktails start with a fresh-squeezed base and build from there — some spirit-forward, some bubbly, some with a citrusy twist that makes them feel like more than just a mixed drink. The secret to all of them is using fresh lemon juice.

Vodka Lemonade
Clean, cold and endlessly drinkable, Vodka Lemonade is the cocktail you reach for when you want something refreshing without a lot of fuss. The key is starting with really good homemade lemonade — fresh-squeezed juice makes all the difference between a drink that's just fine and one that disappears in minutes. This one is simple, satisfying and always welcome at a summer gathering.

Lynchburg Lemonade
Jack Daniel's, orange liqueur and fresh lemon juice topped with lemon-lime soda — the Lynchburg Lemonade earns its name from the citrusy brightness of the combination rather than actual lemonade. It's approachable, a little sweet and very easy to drink, with just enough whiskey character to remind you there's something worth sipping here. It's been winning people over since the 1980s and shows no signs of stopping.

Electric Lemonade
Lemon vodka, blue curaçao and lemon-lime soda give the Electric Lemonade its vivid, almost surreal color — the kind of drink that gets noticed the moment it lands on the table. The lemon vodka doubles down on the citrus while the soda keeps everything light and fizzy. Start with a homemade lemonade base and it goes from a fun party drink to something worth making again and again.

John Daly
The John Daly is the Arnold Palmer's boozier cousin — fresh lemonade and iced tea with a generous pour of vodka that turns a classic afternoon drink into something a little more celebratory.
