Blueberry Lemonade recipe
In the summertime, there is only one thing that I want: lemonade. There’s just nothing like a refreshing ice cold glass of lemony goodness.
It is so tempting to buy but it is so easy to make and so much better homemade. You can very easily create a delicious pitcher of lemonade to share at a party or to sip on a hot summer afternoon.
One of the best things about lemonade is how versatile it is. Want to make it with honey instead of sugar? Go for it. Want to use it in a cocktail? Sure. Want to make it with another flavor? Strawberry lemonade is one of the best things you can drink.
But I see your strawberry lemonade and I raise you something better: blueberry lemonade. Made with pureed blueberries, this sweet and delicious variation of lemonade is worth a try this summer. Blueberries add the perfect balance for tart lemon juice.
Head to the farmers market and pick up some fresh blueberries, then grab your blender or your juicer, because this blueberry lemonade is out of this world.

Tools & glassware
You will need a blender and a fine-mesh sieve for this recipe. We will be making a purée from the blueberries, that we will then strain to make a blueberry juice.
A juicer is also recommended because it can be a lot of work to juice lots of lemons. If you’d like making drinks a lot, you might want to upgrade to a citrus squeezer for your home bar or an electric juicer.

Ingredients
You only need a few simple ingredients to make blueberry lemonade at home. It is full of natural flavors that will please your taste buds. Here’s what to grab at your local grocery store:
Blueberries
Pick up some sweet blueberries. When blueberries are in season, use fresh ones. They have so much bountiful flavor and will make a big difference on the freshness of the lemonade.
You can absolutely make this with frozen blueberries in the offseason, however.
If you do use frozen berries, be sure to let them thaw. You will be blending them up so it doesn’t matter if they get a little bit mushy.
Lemons
While, yes, you could use lemon concentrate from a bottle, I highly suggest you juice your own lemons for this blueberry lemonade.
Fresh lemons have natural sweetness as well as tartness, and you can taste the difference when you use them in lemonade.
If you do go for the fresh lemons, you’re going to need a juicer. You will need quite a bit of lemon juice for this so if you have an electric juicer like mine, it will save your hands a little bit but you can also use a hand juicer or citrus squeezer if you need to.
Be sure to strain out any pulp so that you have a nice smooth lemonade.
Sugar
You can use most kinds of sugar in lemonade. It’s made with simple syrup, but you can use any sugar to make simple syrup. Simple syrup dissolves easily in cold lemonade, so it’s the perfect way to sweeten it. Maple syrup will also work well.
White sugar or cane sugar will not alter the color of this lemonade but brown sugar or honey may. However, the blueberry color is dark, so you may not notice a difference like you would with regular lemonade.
If you prefer you can use your favorite sugar-free substitute instead to make a sugar-free syrup.
Water
For lemonade, use the best water that you have.
If you can use filtered water or bottled water, it will make a nice, clean-tasting difference in the final result. If not, you can use regular tap water.

Variations and substitutions
Here are a few ideas to making this lemonade your own:
Sugar-free Blueberry Lemonade: Use your favorite sugar substitutes such as stevia or coconut sugar to sweeten it.
Blueberry Lemonade Mimosa: Use this lemonade as a base for a mimosa. It would be a great addition to a mimosa bar, too.
Mixed Berry Lemonade: Instead of just blueberries, use a combination of different berry flavors from blackberries, strawberries and/or raspberries instead to make a flavorful variation of this recipe. You will follow all the same steps.
Honey Blueberry Lemonade: Make the lemonade with honey syrup.
Vodka Blueberry Lemonade: Add a splash of vodka to a glass of blueberry lemonade to make a cocktail.
Blueberry Lavender Lemonade: Use lavender simple syrup to give this lemonade a lovely floral flavor.
How to make Blueberry Lemonade
Making this delicious blueberry lemonade recipe at home is much easier than you’d think.
First, make a simple syrup with sugar and water on the stove. Warm them together and stir until the sugar dissolves. Set aside to cool.

Then, wash your blueberries. Add them to the blender with water. Blend them up until smooth.

Pour into a bowl or pitcher through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Strain out the seeds and solids and skins of the blueberry puree. Ensure there are little to no seeds, so strain it a few times if needed. (Grittiness won’t detract from the flavor, but the texture will be off. A little bit is okay, of course!)

Next, you will want to combine the blueberry juices with fresh lemon juice, then you should stir in the simple syrup. Add a little bit and taste it until it’s as sweet as you like.
You can drink the lemonade right away, but it will taste even better after an hour or two in the fridge as the flavors meld together. Pour it over ice and garnish with fresh mint, extra blueberries and lemon slices if you like. Then enjoy this perfect drink!
Store it in a pitcher with a lid or in mason jars in the fridge and enjoy within 1 week.
