About this Red, White & Blue Mojito

The summer is filled with patriotic holidays. There’s Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. And every four years, there’s the Olympics too.

For those counting, that’s at least three times per summer in which you’ll need a patriotic cocktail!

If you’re anything like me, you can’t wait to kick off your shoes and enjoy a much-needed day off work. Relax outside with an ice-cold Red, White and Blue Mojito. It’s essentially my red strawberry mojito that’s layered with “white” ice and some blueberry mojito on top. I added raspberries and blackberries too!

Featuring rum, lime, mint and red and blue berries, this fresh cocktail can be enjoyed all summer, but its patriotic colors make it perfect for holidays like Memorial Day and July 4th.

Why you’ll love this recipe

This easy mojito is perfect for enjoying summertime, even when it’s not a holiday. Featuring fresh berries and mint, it’s a celebration of summer produce, and I just know you’re going to love it as much as me!

  • Mojitos are the quintessential summer drink.
  • This recipe is easy to make, even if you’re a novice cocktail maker.
  • It’s a great way to use your summer produce! (I like to make mine with fresh berries from the local farmers market and mint from my herb garden.)

Tools & equipment

Here’s what you’ll need to make this recipe:

I make mine in a cocktail shaker so it’s easy to strain out the solids, but if you don’t mind them, then you can do it right in the glass.

You’ll also need a muddler, to help you get the flavors of the citrus, berries and mint infused into your drink. If you don’t have a muddler, use the blunt end of a wooden spoon.

Ingredients

The red, white and blue mojito isn’t complicated, but it does have a slightly longer ingredient list than the classic mojito.

Simple syrup: You can also use plain ol’ sugar, but it will take a little longer to mix into the liquids. If you want to save yourself some time to make a bunch of these for a party, you can use mint simple syrup.

Light rum: You will also need to pick out some rum. Go for light rum — also called white rum or silver rum, — like Cruzan or Bacardi. Here’s a rum guide if you want to learn more about it!

Fresh lime juice: If you can, take the time to juice fresh limes. I find this berry version quite succulent and refreshing and the citrus helps bring out their sweetness! The bottled concentrate works too.

Mint: Grab a bunch of fresh mint leaves to muddle into this drink. But be sure to save some for the garnish, though!

Berries: You’ll need some red-colored fruit, like raspberries and strawberries, and blue colored fruit, like blueberries and blackberries. You could also use other fruits like red apples or starfruit. You’ll be muddling these into the drink to squeeze out their flavorful juices, but be sure to reserve some to garnish.

Want to make it non-alcoholic? Here’s what to substitute:

  • Use a zero-proof spirit like Ritual rum alternative or Seedlip Garden 108 instead of the rum.
  • Instead, you may also simply omit the rum, but you should plan to add more club soda.

Fruit for a patriotic mojito

This is an all natural patriotic mojito, with no artificial colors. (Though if you’re looking for a bright blue drink, look no further than these frozen blue margaritas.)

You will want to use at least one type of red berry and one type that’s blue to make this a red, white and blue mojito. The “white” part will come from the layer of ice.

Try these berries in your drinks — any combo would be delicious! I used strawberries, blackberries and blueberries in the ones pictured here.

  • blue: Blueberries and blackberries work well together or alone to make the pretty bluish purple layer.
  • red: The red layer can be made with strawberries, raspberries or cherries — or a combination of all three.
  • white: Ice is enough to be the white layer, but you could also use diced red apple here. Star fruit would also make a pretty patriotic garnish.

Two methods

You can make the red, white and blue mojito two ways:

  1. Mix it all together in the glass. This method leaves more pulp and seeds at the bottom. I don’t mind it, and it’s not as pretty, but it’s a lot simpler to just throw everything in and muddle it together. This leaves you with a pink-ish purple drink.
  2. Make the colors separately to layer the drink. This is the method I used in these photos to get a gradient look, so I’ll detail it here. But if you want it to do it in the glass, just throw in all the berries.

Instructions

Here’s how to make your red, white and blue mojito!

A hand pours juice from a jigger into a textured glass. Bowls with strawberries and blackberries, and a masher are nearby.
A hand pouring liquid from a small metal cup into a clear glass. Fresh strawberries and blackberries with a muddler are visible nearby on a white surface.

First, get out a cocktail shaker or mixing glass. (If you don’t mind the pulp and a simple combined cocktail, you can do it right in the glass.)

Start with either the blue fruits or the red ones. I did red first, with raspberries and strawberries. Add half of the lime juice and simple syrup.

A hand uses a black muddler to press ingredients in a textured glass. Nearby are bowls of blackberries and strawberries with mint.
A hand pours clear liquid from a measuring cup into a glass with a lattice pattern containing red liquid and mint. Bowls of cherries and blackberries are in the background.

Then add the berries and fresh mint and muddle them together until you can smell the mint and the berries’ juices are released. Then add the rum and stir everything together.

A hand pours a red liquid from a gold cocktail shaker into a tall glass. Bowls of berries are on the side.
A hand holds blueberries above a tall glass filled with a red drink containing sliced strawberries, ice, and mint leaves. Two similar drinks and a bowl of berries are visible in the background.

Strain the red layer into a highball glass. Add a few berries or slices and top it with ice cubes or crushed ice. Set it aside and start on the blue layer.

A hand pours liquid from a brass jigger into a glass with muddled blackberries and lime. Bowls of fresh berries are beside the glass on a white surface.

Next, clean out your shaker and start the blue layer. Repeat the process. Add the berries, mint, simple syrup and lime juice.

A hand is pouring a clear liquid from a shot glass into a larger glass containing a red liquid. Bowls of berries and mint leaves are in the background.
A person pours pink liquid from a cocktail shaker into a tall glass with ice, strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries. Another similar glass is beside it on a white surface.

Finally, stir in the rum and strain it into the glass over the ice. Add some blueberries and blackberries for garnish.

Top with a little club soda, add a mint sprig and a straw and this puppy is ready to drink! Serve it with some thematically on-brand recipes like Chantilly cake or red, white and blue cupcakes.

  • Using a muddle stick, mash the mint, berries and sugar to release the berries' juices and the mint oils.
  • Add 1 ounce rum and stir together. Pour into a highball glass. Add some more red berries and mint leaves, and top with a generous amount of ice.
  • Blue layer: In a cocktail shaker or mixing glass, add ½ ounce lime juice, ½ ounce simple syrup, the mint leaves, blueberries and blackberries. For a stronger citrus taste, add one of the lime rinds as well.
  • Using a muddle stick, mash the mint, berries and sugar to release the berries' juices and the mint oils.

  • Garnish the glasses with fresh mint sprigs, slices of lime or a skewer of berries. Add additional club soda to glasses if you’d prefer a lighter drink.

notes

You can substitute 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar for the simple syrup if you prefer.
Want a simpler cocktail? Use mint simple syrup for a simplified cocktail. Then muddle all the berries together instead of making layers. You can also make the drink right in the glass, but there will be a good bit of berry pulp and seeds that may not be a desirable texture for some.
Non-alcoholic version: Use a zero-proof spirit like Ritual rum alternative or Seedlip Garden 108 instead of the rum. You may also simply omit the rum, but you should plan to add more club soda.
