Your ultimate guide to Tiki Cocktails

There’s nothing quite like a beach vacation. The sun, the sand and the waves bring a bit of magic, melting away the stress of the real world.

While I love a tropical getaway, it’s not in the cards as often as I would like. Luckily, there are plenty of Tiki cocktails to whisk me away, even if it’s my backyard I’m enjoying rather than the beach.

Tiki culture became popular in American pop culture during the mid-20th century, inspired by Polynesia and other tropical regions. Now Tiki bars are as common in tropical locations as they are in big cities. It’s easy to see why, as these fruity drinks — often starring rum — are fun and delicious!

Quick tips for tasty Tiki Cocktails

When it comes to Tiki Cocktails — and really any cocktails — fresh is best. That means fresh ingredients, in this case juices, whenever possible! An electric juicer is a must if you’re juicing at home. If you’re opting for store-bought, try to find juices that have been recently squeezed instead of a canned option or frozen concentrate.

Don’t be afraid to have fun with your glassware! Serving your sipper in a Tiki mug makes you feel like you’ve bellied up to a true beach bar. These mugs can be made of glass, but many are ceramic and feature faces inspired by Polynesian masks. Even if they don’t have a handle, they’re all considered mugs.

Tiki drinks are well known for over the top garnishes, so this is not the time to do something subtle. A cocktail umbrella or cherry on a cocktail pick is needed at the very least! You can use fruit, herbs, flowers and more to make your drink wow-worthy. There are so many garnish options to pick from — I recommend something that complements the flavors of the drink (for example, pineapple leaves for a drink with pineapple juice).

What to serve with Tiki Cocktails

Polynesian, Caribbean, and Asian flavors provide the perfect compliment for decadent Tiki cocktails.

Pineapple salsa, with homemade tortilla chips, is a great option if you just need a light snack or as an appetizer for a group. Kebabs or crab rangoon would be perfect for a party as they’re easy to enjoy on the go.

For a meal that’s more hearty, try spam musubi. And don’t forget dessert! Boozy dole whip or lemon drop cookies keep the fruity fun going.
