About this Chocolate Chip Frappuccino recipe

This frozen coffee drink is inspired by the popular Starbucks version. Milk, strong coffee, chocolate syrup and ice blend together into a smooth, chocolatey drink with a thick, icy consistency.

Mini chocolate chips add extra chocolate flavor and create little granules of chocolate at the bottom as the drink settles. If you enjoy my S’mores Frappuccino, be sure to try this recipe. This homemade version is an easy way to recreate the coffee shop favorite at home.

Ingredients & essentials

This chocolate chip frappuccino comes together with a handful of simple ingredients that blend into a rich, chocolatey frozen drink.

A frappuccino’s base starts with strong coffee or espresso. Strong coffee simply means coffee brewed with about double the usual amount of coffee grounds. For a caffeine-free version, omit the coffee or use decaf. Whole milk creates the creamiest base and helps give the drink its smooth texture.

Chocolate syrup and mini chocolate chips provide the chocolate flavor that defines this drink. You can use any brand or make your own homemade chocolate syrup for a richer flavor. Granulated sugar balances the cocoa flavor with sweetness. Ice cubes are essential because they create a thick consistency.

Vanilla extract * and a pinch of cinnamon enhance the chocolate flavor and round out the drink.

You will also need a blender capable of crushing ice and blending frozen drinks smoothly. A high-speed blender works best if you plan to blend the chocolate chips directly into the drink. Tall glasses work well for serving once the drink is blended.

Instructions

Before you begin, you’ll need to brew up some coffee and let it cool. Add a few ice cubes if you’re in a hurry, or you can use cold brew. And if you’re making your own whipped cream, do that before you start, too. Otherwise, grab your measuring cups and spoons and get out the blender. The whole thing comes together in seconds.

Tips & tricks

  • Blend in short bursts if needed. If your blender struggles with ice or chocolate chips, blend in shorter bursts and pause briefly between blends so the ingredients break down evenly.
  • Stir in the chocolate chips if necessary. If your blender is not strong enough to blend chocolate chips smoothly, leave them out of the blender and stir them into the finished drink.
  • Adjust the ice for the right texture. If the drink becomes thinner than expected while blending, add a handful of ice and blend again to maintain the thick frappuccino consistency.
  • Use very cold ingredients. Starting with cold milk and chilled coffee helps keep the drink thick and smooth after blending.

Serving suggestions

Serve this beverage immediately while it is cold and thick. Garnish with plenty of whipped cream, chocolate syrup and chocolate chips.

This frappuccino pairs well with pastries, muffins or chocolate desserts. It works nicely as an afternoon coffee treat with a handful of salty popcorn, a warm-weather pick-me-up or a dessert drink after dinner.

FAQ

Do I need to have a highspeed, expensive blender to make this recipe?

Not necessarily, but you do need a blender strong enough to blend mini chocolate chips without damaging the blades. If your blender is not strong enough, skip adding the chocolate chips to the blender and stir them in afterward or add them only as a topping.

Are there chunks of chocolate in this drink?

This will depend on how long you blend it for. If you blend for 30 seconds, you may get tiny chunks of chocolate, smaller than the size of sprinkles, and they will generally sink to the bottom of the drink due to their density. If you blend for longer, then the pieces will gradually get smaller and smaller, but you may need to add more ice to keep the frappuccino consistency.

Can I make this drink without coffee?

Yes. The strong coffee adds flavor similar to the Starbucks version, but it can be omitted for a caffeine-free drink. The frappuccino will still be rich, chocolatey and smooth.

Can I use a different type of milk?

Whole milk creates the creamiest texture, but almond milk can be used if needed. The drink will still be cold and chocolatey though the texture may be slightly lighter.

notes

Storing leftovers: Frappuccinos are best enjoyed as soon as you make them. If you save leftovers, place it in the fridge. Expect the texture and flavor to be different after saving, as the ice will melt and the drink will taste diluted. Re-blend it with a few more ice cubes to liven up the texture, but the flavor might be a little different. Add a splash of more coffee if needed for flavor.
Preparing in advance: You can make the base ahead of time. Stir all of the ingredients into a mixing bowl or pitcher, but leave out the ice until you’re ready to blend everything up. When pouring everything into the blender, use a spatula to make sure you get anything that settled on the bottom.
