Ingredients

Each of these key ingredients are a part of the secret to a chewier cookie — that are truly the best ever! Here is what you’ll need to have on hand:

  • all-purpose flour
  • unsalted butter
  • mini chocolate chip morsels
  • egg
  • granulated sugar
  • brown sugar
  • baking soda
  • pure vanilla extract
  • salt

Substitutions & variations

Semisweet chocolate chips are most often used in chocolate chip cookie recipes. However, you can use milk chocolate or dark chocolate as well. You can even add peanut butter chips, white chocolate, or caramel chips to these cookies.

You can also make gluten-free chocolate chip cookies by using a 1:1 gluten-free flour substitute.

Reduce the amount of refined sugar in this recipe by using coconut sugar in place of brown sugar. Keep in mind it will change the flavor a bit, but will still be so yummy!

If you only have salted butter on hand, you can use that in place of unsalted butter. I would just omit the salt that the recipe calls for.

Tips & tricks

Here are some tips and tricks for making this recipe:

  • If you don’t have parchment paper, then grease your sheet pan well with non-stick cooking spray or butter. However, if you know that your cookie sheet tends to make cookies stick then you will likely have more success with parchment paper.
  • A key to make softer cookies is to not over-mix the cookie dough. This baking process isn’t difficult, but make sure you don’t over mix the dough and don’t over-bake the cookies. As a general rule, ingredients should be mixed until just combined.
  • Use room temperature butter in the wet ingredients so that it more easily incorporates with everything else.

What to serve with Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies

A cold glass of milk is a classic favorite to serve with cookies like these, that have a lovely soft texture. But there are so many other incredible drinks to serve with chocolate chip cookies too! Hot chocolate is always a hit with chocolate chip cookies.

A classic Irish coffee pairs so well with these gooey and rich cookies. I don’t know about you, but I love the combo of chocolate and coffee. So these cookies with an espresso martini would be crazy tasty too!

If you’re looking for an extra fun boozy drink to serve with fresh cookies, spiced hot buttered rum would go so well with these.

Change things up and serve a warm cookie with a big scoop of cold vanilla ice cream!

FAQ

How should soft chocolate chip cookies be stored?

To keep the soft texture of these deliciously chewy cookies, store fully cooled cookies in an airtight container with a slice of bread. The bread will absorb air and keep the cookies soft! However, if you don’t have that just store them in an airtight container on their own and they’ll be ok. These cookies will last for 3 days at room temperature. You can also freeze them for up to 2 months!

Should eggs be cold or room temperature for baking cookies?

Allowing eggs to come to room temperature before adding to cookie dough helps them mix more easily with the other ingredients. It is best to bake with room temperature eggs.
