Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso Recipe

If you’ve got a sweet tooth and love coffee, then this incredible brown sugar espresso drink will be your new bestie! Dark brown sugar, blonde espresso and creamy oat milk come together to make the iced coffee drink of your dreams.

This is an easy copycat recipe for a Starbucks drink that has become increasingly popular in recent years. But, let’s be honest. Most of us would love to save a few bucks by making our own delicious coffee drinks right at home.

I’ve learned to make insanely good cold brew coffee at home, and now I don’t even want to grab it at a coffee shop. And after making the brown sugar shaken espresso at home, I don’t think I’ll need to grab it at Starbucks again either! It really is that good. (For that matter, there will be homemade mini blueberry muffins to go with them all.)

Make a brown sugar espresso drink that challenges the Starbucks version head to head. The best part — you can make it in your own kitchen while still in your PJs. That’s a win in my book!

What is an Iced Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso?

Iced brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso is a drink that originated at Starbucks. This tasty beverage has quite a big following and has become really popular.

It uses a few pumps of brown sugar sugar syrup, some cinnamon, blonde espresso, a unsweetened oat milk to make a syrupy, sweet drink that’s good to the very last drop.

Ingredients

A Starbucks shaken espresso contains some pretty specific ingredients, but there are ways to tweak it which we’ll get into below.

So here are the simple ingredients you need to make a homemade version of the real thing:

  • blonde espresso: The Starbucks website says that it uses blonde espresso. However, you really can use any kind of espresso you want. Get adventurous and make this drink your own.
  • brown sugar syrup: Buy this at the grocery store or make your own brown sugar simple syrup really easily with just brown sugar and water.
  • oat milk: The oat milk brand you use doesn’t really matter. Just try and choose something creamy!
  • ground cinnamon
  • ice
A jar of coffee and a jar of syrup.

Substitutions & variations

While this recipe calls for pretty specific ingredients, coffee shops are all about customizing your drink! So you can do that at home too. Here are a few different ways to explore this copycat Starbucks coffee drink:

Quick version: Instead of having to do the step of adding cinnamon, you could make a brown sugar cinnamon syrup.

Different milks: Feel free to use soy milk or almond milk instead of oat milk. You can use whole milk or skim milk too, but avoid using half-and-half or heavy cream because they will become too thick when shaken.

Mocha shaken espresso: Turn this recipe into a chocolate dream with some homemade chocolate syrup thrown into the mix.

Gingerbread shaken espresso: Swap the light brown sugar syrup for this gingerbread syrup and make a morning coffee perfect for the holidays.

Sugar cookie shaken espresso: Instead of a rich brown sugar syrup, use sugar cookie syrup and make a creamy oat milk drink that tastes like a big cookie.

Sugar-free shaken espresso: Use sugar-free simple syrup or honey simple syrup in this recipe to make something without sugar. You could also use coconut sugar in the recipe for as a refined sugar replacement.

How to make espresso

The easiest way to make this easy copycat recipe is with an espresso machine. Personally, I use a Nespresso machine and I love it.

Having it on hand for easy lattes and cappuccinos has been a game changer. It is definitely the easiest way to make espresso drinks at home.

If you don’t have an espresso machine, you can still make this recipe! Just use very strong coffee or brew espresso another way:

  • With an Aeropress: Learn how to use this easy method for making coffee and espresso. It’s really simple!
  • With a stovetop espresso maker: You can make really good espresso on the stove top with a simple little pot like this.
  • Using Instant espresso powder: This is probably my least favorite method becuase the flavor isn’t very fresh. However, it’s great in a pinch especially good for traveling or if you can’t access these other methods.

You can make your own brown sugar syrup in just a few easy steps:

Tips & tricks

Here are some tips and tricks for making this recipe:

  • I have found that the best espresso is not found in a local grocery store. Instead, buy your espresso beans at local coffee shops that have fresh roasted beans.
  • Make a frothy mixture for the top of your brown sugar shaken espresso by frothing the oat milk with a milk frother and pouring it over the top of the completed drink.
  • Be sure to use plenty of ice! Keeping the drink cold throughout the entire process will give you the best end result.

notes

Mix things up with one of these ideas:
Flavored shaken espresso: Use flavored simple syrups to make this recipe taste any way you like it.
Sugar-free shaken espresso: Use sugar-free simple syrup with stevia or an unrefined sugar syrup like maple syrup or honey simple syrup in this recipe.
Oat-free shaken espresso: You can use soy milk, almond milk or coconut milk instead. Whole milk or skim milk will also work, but half-and-half and heavy cream will be too thick. When shaken, they will firm up too much.
