Guava Cosmopolitan Cocktail Recipe
Cosmos are one of the quintessential classic — and classy — cocktails. (Fans of Carrie Bradshaw & co. have known this for years.)
Served in a fancy cocktail glass, a traditional cosmopolitan cocktail is made with vodka, cranberry juice, lime juice and triple sec. It’s cousins with the Cape Codder and the Madras.
But the cosmo can get boring if you make or order them a lot. Sometimes, making better cocktails at home is as simple as substituting something else for a key ingredient.
This guava version of the Cosmopolitan cocktail changes out just one ingredient — the cranberry juice for guava juice — to make a totally new cocktail that is packed with flavor.
Guava is a sweet, tropical fruit. I grew up eating it for dessert with custard when I visited my grandparents. Sadly, it’s not enjoyed everywhere, but these days it’s not uncommon to find guava juice at the store.
Why you’ll love this recipe
The guava cosmopolitan is a fun and flavorful cocktail for summertime or anytime. You’re going to love it because…
- With just a few ingredients, it’s quick and easy to make.
- Guava brings a light and bright flavor to this classic cocktail.
- It’s refreshing and perfect for summertime.
What is guava juice?
Guavas are a sweet, tropical fruit that I enjoy eating when I visit South Africa.
If you’ve never tried one, you absolutely should. Once ripe, the taste is sweet and reminiscent of strawberry, pear, mango and even grapefruit. Unripe guavas can be quite sour.
When juiced, the result is a sweet juice that makes a wonderful cocktail mixer. You can mix it in most drinks where you’d enjoy fruit juices.
Where to buy guava juice
I rarely find fresh guavas in my local supermarket in America, but you might find them at an international grocery store.
You can sometimes find guava juice in the juice aisle or in the international aisle at a regular supermarket. Worth a look, I say!
If not, you can also buy guava juice online. Ceres is my favorite brand.
If you don’t have any luck finding guava juice, feel free to sub in other kinds of juice to make a cosmopolitan all your own!
Try it with pomegranate juice or pineapple juice, or go back to classic with cranberry.
These sparkling cosmpolitans are also something fun to try.
How to make a guava cosmopolitan
The Guava Cosmopolitan is a fun and classy cocktail for any night in with the ladies, or just sipping on solo at home.
To make it, you will need vodka, guava juice, lime juice and triple sec.
And a lime wedge for a garnish of course! No drink is complete without a garnish.
Toss all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice, and shake, shake, shake. Then strain into a martini glass.
One sip, and you’ll feel like you’re vacationing in both a tropical and cosmopolitan destination.
I guarantee you: Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte would be very, very jealous.
Guava cocktails
If you find yourself with a surplus of guava juice after you try this cosmopolitan, here are a few ideas for cocktails you can make:
- This guava mimosa is bright and refreshing when you mix guava juice with champagne.
- Try mixing it with rum for this guava rum cocktail or a guava mojito.
- Adding ginger beer and vodka will give you a guava Moscow mule.

Hi Susannah, I am making this tomorrow evening. I only have ice cubes and no shaker… Should I crush the ice cubes and add them to a pitcher? How many ounces of ice per serving? I am a cocktail newbie 😊
Susannah says
Hey Terri! You can simply stir the mixture together, without ice, then pour it over ice. You can also use any jar with a lid for a shaker. Cosmopolitans are usually served neat (meaning without ice), but if you want to use ice, it would still be good. I typically fill glasses mostly to the top with ice (like 3/4 full or a little more) and then pour over top. Hope this helps!

I used my daughter’s water bottle (desperate measures!) and crushed the ice with a mallet. I poured the mixture over the crushed ice. Maybe not exactly as it should have been but nevertheless just wonderful and loved by all! Thank you!
