About this guide

I love hosting. Birthdays, holidays, you name it. There’s something about bringing people together that brings me so much joy.

The special thing about a cocktail party is that there’s nothing set in stone. It’s not filled with traditions like a holiday so the menu and mood is totally flexible. You can take a theme or a drink and build the party around it, going as big as you want!

If you haven’t hosted a cocktail party before, or want some tips to step up your next one, then you’re in luck. I’m sharing what I’ve found works best for cocktail parties that will leave everyone waiting for the next one!

Why we love cocktail parties

  1. A cocktail party fits for many occasions. Birthdays, anniversaries, retirements… You name it, a cocktail party can celebrate it!
  2. Hosting doesn’t have to be complicated. There are some easy things you can do to make a cocktail party easier on yourself.
  3. Perfect for at-home celebrations. I love entertaining at home so I know where to find everything and am comfortable.

How to plan a cocktail party

No two cocktail parties are created equal, and that’s half the fun! Here’s what you need to consider as you prep for your next party:

  1. Size and format. You’ll want to determine your guest list to help shape the size of your cocktail party. Once you’ve nailed it down, pick between an intimate cocktail hour vs. an open house. If your guest list is larger, I’d lean into an open house to make it easier for you.
  2. What’s the focus. Whether it’s a fun theme or a signature drink, having something to focus on will give your party shape.
  3. Budget. As with any celebration, you’ll want to set a budget and stick to it! There are plenty of ways to stock your bar without breaking the bank, and you can determine your menu based on how much you want to spend.
  4. Plan ahead. Make sure you send invites out ahead of time so everyone can mark their calendars.

Setting up your space

The great thing about a cocktail party is that it can be whatever you want it to be. The setup will vary depending on what works for the occasion and the vibe you’re going for.

One thing to remember is that you don’t need to have an elaborate bar setup to make it a success. You can set up drinks on a counter, on a bar cart * or even in a cooler!

There are a few options that would work for a cocktail party. If you want to keep it simple, you can pick a big batch drink (or make your favorite cocktail as a batch) and have it in glasses ready for guests to grab a and go. It’s important to wait to add any bubbly ingredients until right before serving so the drinks don’t go flat. Hold off on ice as well so you don’t inadvertently water down the drink!

Drink stations

For an option that’s more of a conversation starter, set up a drink station. You can pick one or two drinks to feature, and give your guests all the ingredients. I like to use signs to instruct them on how to make the drinks, but they have some flexibility to craft them to their preferences too.

The other fun thing to do is to set up some type of bar. Mimosa bar, margarita bar, the options are almost endless. The general idea is that you provide the ingredients and your guests get to craft their perfect drink. It’s a great icebreaker and conversation starter for any guests that may not know each other. I like to include a zero-proof spirit in my setup for those who may prefer to skip the booze.

No matter how you choose to setup for your party, there are a few essentials that you’ll want to provide. Ice is a must — use your favorite ice bucket * as a fun way to display. A garnish board provides options, just pick garnishes that work well with the drinks that you’re serving. Pitchers or drink dispensers, even a punch bowl * are all great if you want everyone to be able to serve themselves.

What to serve at a cocktail party

While you can truly make each cocktail party you host different to fit the occasion, here’s what I recommend serving for the most success.

  • A signature cocktail, batch punch or themed drink station
  • Beer and wine, as a backup for those who may prefer it — just one or two options will suffice
  • Something nonalcoholic, preferably a mocktail so those who prefer not to drink still have something special to sip
  • Plenty of ice, probably more than you think you’ll need!
  • Common mixers, like club soda, ginger ale or lemonade

Essential bar tools & glassware

If you already have a bar setup, I’m guessing you have what you need to make your cocktail party a success. You’ll want the basic bar tools like a shaker, jigger, etc. Be sure to check the recipe of the drink you’ll be serving in case it requires something special!

For a drink station or bar setup, you’ll want to leave these tools out so guests can properly craft their drink. If you’ll be playing bartender and making a batch cocktail before the party starts, you can simply set out the finished cocktail.

When it comes to glassware, the choice is yours. For a party that you want to feel fancy, use glasses that fit the drink. If you want to skip the dishes, you can opt for plastic cups (a permanent marker will help everyone keep their drinks straight).

Food menu

While you can certainly host a sit down dinner for your cocktail party, I prefer to stick to appetizers and bar snacks. They are easier to eat while mingling and I like the variety they offer so everyone has something to enjoy.

It’s always nice to have things you can make ahead, I find it eases the pressure of hosting and helps my parties come together in a way that leaves me ready to enjoy them rather than rushing around!

Tips for hosting

After plenty of trial and error, here are some helpful tips and tricks to ensure you host the best cocktail parties right in the comfort of your home!

  • Make things ahead as much as possible. From making a signature cocktail or punch to the appetizers, anything you can do the day before or the morning of the big day will make your life easier come happy hour night.
  • Keep clean-up to a minimum with plastic cups and paper plates and napkins.
  • On a budget? It’s okay to ask guests to bring their own beverages and/or snacks! You’re providing the venue, after all.
