It’s an easy cocktail for summer parties, backyard barbecues and Cinco de Mayo celebrations.

Ingredients & essentials

This blueberry margarita comes together with just a handful of ingredients, but each one plays an important role.

Homemade blueberry syrup serves as the base, giving the drink its striking color and bold flavor. Using fresh blueberries in the syrup create a sweeter, more natural blueberry taste than most store-bought syrups.

A good blanco or reposado tequila comes next, adding the cocktail’s boozy kick.

Triple sec adds a touch of sweet citrus flavor and helps round out the tart lime juice. Freshly squeezed lime juice is essential here, adding acidity that makes the drink really pop.

For garnish, you’ll need a few fresh berries and a lime wedge. A rim of margarita sugar adds a festive finish and highlights the berry flavors in the drink.

To make the cocktail, you’ll also need a cocktail shaker *, a jigger for measuring and either a margarita glass * or a rocks glass *.

Best tequila for margaritas

Blanco tequila is lovely and clean, making it my favorite choice for this blueberry margarita. Because it isn’t aged, it has a bright, crisp flavor that lets the blueberry syrup and lime juice shine.

Reposado is great when you want a little more depth. Aged in oak barrels for a few months, it develops subtle notes of vanilla, caramel and spice that pair well with blueberries.

juice boost

Want to get the most juice out of your citrus? Let it sit at room temperature for a few hours before juicing. Cold fruit holds onto its juice, while warmer fruit releases it more easily, giving you better results with less effort.

Tips & tricks

  • Make the blueberry syrup ahead of time. It keeps well in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, making it easy to mix up margaritas whenever the craving strikes.
  • Chill the syrup before using it. Cold syrup helps keep the cocktail crisp and refreshing.
  • Try a salt rim instead. Margarita Sugar complements the blueberry flavor beautifully, but a classic salt rim works just as well.
  • Turn it into a frozen blueberry margarita. Blend the tequila, triple sec, blueberry syrup and lime juice with about 1 cup of ice until smooth.

notes

Tequila: Blanco works great for a bright, clean flavor. Reposado adds a little warmth and depth if you want something slightly richer.
Rim: Sugar is the sweeter, fruitier choice and pairs beautifully with the blueberry. Salt works too if you prefer a more classic margarita vibe.
Lime juice: Always use fresh — bottled lime juice won’t give you the same bright, tart flavor.
Make-ahead: The blueberry syrup can be made up to 2 weeks in advance and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Frozen variation: To make a frozen blueberry margarita, add all ingredients to a blender with 1 cup of ice and blend until smooth.
