Your ultimate guide to black cocktails

When you hear ‘black cocktails,’ you probably jump straight to Halloween parties. It’s true, one of these sips can easily turn spooky with the right presentation! However, these dark and broody drinks can also be elegant.

Although some do rely on food coloring to get the perfect deep hue, others star cola, coffee and even blackberries! Plus, you can sip without worrying you’ll end up with teeth and a mouth that look like you belong in a horror movie.

Don’t be afraid to give these black cocktails a try! They’re fun, flavorful and I think you’re going to love them.

Quick tips for serving cocktails

Every gathering is a little different, but there are some things that help simplify things no matter the size of the group:

Small touches go a long way. From a garnish to a rimmed glass to an impressive ice cube, you can take a drink to the next level with just a small adjustment.

Make a big batch. If you’re worried about having time to mingle, make your drinks as a batch. Be sure to wait on any ice or bubbly ingredients until just before serving.

Allow for adjustments. If you want to ensure everyone has a drink they’ll enjoy, consider a drink station. That way everyone can craft their drink just the way they like it.

Offer options. For those that prefer to skip the booze, make sure you offer a mocktail option! You can use zero-proof spirits or opt for a recipe that doesn’t have any alcohol in it.

Use caution with activated charcoal: Some black cocktails get their color from activated charcoal, which can interfere with how the body absorbs certain medications. If you take medication, check with a doctor or pharmacist before drinking charcoal-tinted drinks. Food coloring, blackberries, cola and espresso are easy ways to get a dark drink without the concern. (None of the recipes below contain it, but it’s worth noting if you’re out and about and considering ordering a charcoal-infused cocktail.)

Serving suggestions

Since there are so many different flavor profiles that black cocktails can have, you’ll want to tailor your menu to pair with whatever you choose.

If you’re serving a sweet cocktail, balance it out with salty snacks like charcuterie cups or pepperoni dip. Drinks that lean boozy call for something a little heavier, so consider serving pigs in a blanket, homemade hummus with pita chips or puff pastry pinwheels.

For a Halloween bash, add a splash of color with syringe jello shots and some stunning spiderweb tarts. It’s sure to give your guests a scary good time!

The best black cocktails

No matter the occasion, these black cocktails are sure to stun!

1
A glass of dark liquor with a large ice cube, set on a white surface.
Black Russian
Vodka and Kahlúa are all this two-ingredient classic needs to turn a glass of ice into something dark, smooth and bittersweet. It sips like iced coffee with a grown-up edge. If you like White Russians, this is the one to try next.

Black Magic Champagne Cocktail
Sparkling wine takes on a deep midnight color here thanks to black vodka, and the crisp, starry bubbles are as lively as ever. These look far more complicated than they are. Pour it at a Halloween party or anywhere the dress code calls for a little black dress-up.

Espresso Martini
A shot of fresh espresso gives this martini its bold coffee flavor and deep color, and vodka and coffee liqueur keep it smooth. A pale, frothy crown floats on top of the dark drink. Shake it hard and long for the thickest foam, and garnish it with a trio of coffee beans.

A cocktail in a glass with a slice of peach and a blackberry on the rim, placed on a wooden coaster. There are more peaches and blackberries in the blurred background.
Blackberry Peach Whiskey Sour
Like summer in a glass, this drink features the jammy tartness of fresh blackberries while peach rounds out the whiskey and lemon juice with soft, juicy sweetness. With a color somewhere between ink and plum, the result is an almost-black drink, a good option when true black feels too stark.

A cocktail in a coupe glass with a black sugar rim and dried citrus garnish, inspired by apple cider punch, sits on a black coaster with a skull decoration in the background.
Black Margarita
On the surface, this margarita looks like a mystery, but it's just a classic margarita at a masquerade. With black-colored tequila, lime juice and orange liqueur, the flavor is straightforward and gives plenty of the bright, tart bite everyone loves in a margarita. A rim of black lava salt adds a sleek touch.

A glass of dark soda with ice and a striped straw is placed on a white surface, surrounded by wrapped candies and a black bowl filled with similar candies.
Tootsie Roll
Named for the chewy candy, this playful drink with root beer and Kahlua tastes of childhood nostalgia — chocolate with a hint of orange. It leans sweet and dessert-like, so it works well after dinner. Serve this one at a Halloween party or anytime your sweet tooth calls.

A glass is half full of dark liquid while foam fills the remaining glass. A can of Guinness sits out of focus in the background along with the cage from a champagne bottle.
Black Velvet
Stout beer and champagne may sound like an odd pairing, but the roasty, malty beer settles with another layer of bubbles, blending into a silky, elegant drink. The look is sleek and the flavor is drier than most sparkling cocktails. If a Mimosa is too sweet for your taste, this is the brunch drink to try instead.

Blackberry Mojito
Blackberries turn the usual green mojito a deep purple-black, and their jammy sweetness softens the mint and lime. Muddle the berries well to release the most color. Serve it over plenty of crushed ice so the drink stays bold from the first sip to the last.

Whiskey & Coke
Cola brings caramel and vanilla notes that meet the oak and spice of whiskey in this two-ingredient highball. It takes about 30 seconds to mix. Use a good whiskey and plenty of ice for the best balance. Swap in with rum or Jack Daniel’s, add a squeeze of lime or try it with another flavor of cola to mix things up.

Iced bubble tea in tall glasses with blue straws, tapioca pearls at the bottom, and jars of black tea, extra pearls, and milk nearby.
Tiger Milk Tea
Brown sugar boba is the black element here, and the chewy, caramel-sweet pearls sink to the bottom of the glass while syrup streaks the sides. Cold milk and strong black tea give the drink its toasty backbone, though the boba works just as well with a different milk tea, lemonade or juice. Make a batch of pearls ahead of time and let guests build their own.

A glass of iced brown beverage with a striped straw and lime wedge garnish, next to a lime, ginger root, and a wooden citrus reamer.
Dark & Stormy
Dark rum floats over spicy ginger beer in the classic Dark & Stormy, with a squeeze of lime to keep things sharp. The ginger bite stands up to cool weather and cloudy skies. It needs only three ingredients and a tall glass.

12
glass bottle of homemade black vodka with cork on white background
Black Vodka
A few drops of food coloring turn plain vodka jet black without changing its clean, neutral flavor. Pour it into any clear mixer for an instant spooky drink. It also works as a swap for regular vodka in any cocktail that needs a darker look. And you can also use this method with any spirit to turn any cocktail into a statement.
