Your ultimate guide to Watermelon Cocktails

It’s no coincidence that watermelon is at its peak season in the summertime. After all, this succulent red fruit is oh so refreshing on a hot summer day and is fully at home at any cookout.

While a platter of watermelon is hard to beat, incorporating the subtle sweetness into a drink may just do it. Unlike other fruits, this is one you can’t really find frozen, so I like to head to the local farmers market and pick up a fresh melon — I find that it gets me the most flavor. It’s also a good chance to pick up ingredients with complimentary flavors and garnishes that add a layer of complexity to your drink.

Sweet and colorful watermelon is a perfect pair for almost any spirit. Vodka, tequila, rum… there’s a recipe for every taste! With one of these watermelon cocktails in hand, you’ll be ready for even the hottest of days!

Quick tips for watermelon drinks

Make a big batch. Watermelon syrup is the perfect way to capture that summertime essence for a pitcher drink. You could also make some watermelon juice in your blender to help amp up the watermelon flavor.

Pick the right melon. While there are a lot of tips and tricks floating around about how to pick the right watermelon, here’s what I do. Check the field spot and find a watermelon with a spot that is more orange than yellow (this means it was likely on the vine longer). Once you’ve narrowed it down, pick up the melons and opt for the heaviest one, which usually has a higher water content and is sweeter.

Don’t forget the garnish. Reserve some of your fresh watermelon to decorate your drinks. Watermelon cubes, balls or slices all add a nice touch, plus some extra watermelon flavor!

Use the rind. For a real conversation starter, hollow out half of the watermelon and use it as a punch bowl *!

What to serve with watermelon cocktails

Watermelon Cocktails pair well with fun summer fare!

If you’re entertaining, make it a meal with favorite recipes: Mexican street corn, air fryer ribs and a pasta salad. Those would all work for a weeknight dinner, too! You can even make watermelon salad.

For times when you’d rather stick with finger food, try a batch of goat cheese stuffed bacon wrapped jalapeños or caprese skewers.

As a sweet treat, pair your watermelon sippers with more summer flavors. Some of my favorites are s’mores avalanche cookies (no baking needed) and frozen margarita bars.
