Your ultimate guide to rum cocktails

Ah, rum. With a warm, rich flavor that ranges from light, sweet and buttery to crisp, spicy and earthy, it enhances a multitude of drinks.

When people hear rum, they tend to think of tropical sippers at home at a beach resort. It makes sense, given the many recipes begging to be enjoyed ocean-side. But at its core, rum often carries notes of caramel, vanilla and brown sugar, which can work well in more serious sippers.

Whether you already love rum or it’s stuck on your bar cart *, these recipes are sure to sway you!

Quick tips for hosting

Anytime I’m entertaining, I like to make it easier on myself. Selecting one recipe as a signature drink for the occasion lets me focus on having all the right fixings and garnishes to make an impact. From there, I decide to either create drinks as a batch (which means I only have to mix once) or set up a drink station where guests can make their own cocktails to fit their preferences.

There are plenty of options when it comes to rum — you can pick your favorite bottle, defer to the recipe or opt for the best bottle you can afford. My general rule of thumb for rum is if a bottle doesn’t list the country it was made in, I steer clear. Quality rums are usually proud to highlight their origin.

What to serve with rum cocktails

Rum Cocktails don’t take themselves too seriously, they’re full of flavor and fun! Make a menu to compliment them.

The spice of baked jalapeño poppers compliments the sweet flavors of many rum drinks. Charcuterie cups are an easy-to-eat version of the classic charcuterie board that are perfect for a crowd. Add a bit of crunch with a batch of puff pastry cheese twists!

For some sweetness, play up the fruity flavors by serving something like dark chocolate banana bread or chocolate covered strawberries. Iced lemon pound cake would bring complementing citrus notes that would be tasty!
