What are hot cocoa bombs?
Hot cocoa bombs are spheres made of real chocolate and filled with hot cocoa mix, marshmallows and other fillings.
When stirred with hot milk, the outer shell melts away and the fillings pop out.
Toppings like marshmallows will float to the top while the melted chocolate shell and hot chocolate mix dissolve into the milk when stirred into the cup.
These white chocolate peppermint hot chocolate bombs use a shell of white chocolate, peppermint hot cocoa mix and pieces of candy cane to make a festive mug of hot cocoa.

Hot Cocoa vs. Hot Chocolate
Hot chocolate and hot cocoa are similar in flavor but the ingredients are different. Hot chocolate is made with real, melted chocolate. Hot cocoa is made with cocoa powder.
Since this recipe contains both chocolate and cocoa, you could call them either hot chocolate bombs or hot cocoa bombs.
Whatever you want to call it and however you make these treats, you can’t deny they are festive, fun and delicious!

Equipment
To make hot chocolate bombs, you’ll need to pick up a few things.
Molds: First and foremost, you need at least one dome-shaped silicone mold to make them in. These silicone molds are perfect for the job.
Chocolate warmer: Though you can warm the chocolate in the microwave or in a double boiler on the stove, it’s much easier to use a melting pot. Chocolate is very finicky when it meets heat, so a device like this keeps the chocolate warm without overcooking it. Bonus that you can use it to make chocolate-covered strawberries too!
Food-safe paintbrushes: Culinary paintbrushes are really helpful for assembly. You can get by with a small spatula or spoon, but small paintbrushes are more delicate and less messy. You can also use them for decorating the tops of the bombs.
Bags for gifting: To give these beauties away, I like to put them into cellophane bags and tie them up with a ribbon. These iridescent bags are really fun and festive.
Other gifts: For my friends who
You could also add a swizzle stick or a chocolate spoon.

Ingredients
Hot chocolate bombs don’t really need much more than melting chocolate, marshmallows and hot cocoa mix, but you can make them as fancy as you like.
Melting chocolate wafers
Melting chocolate wafers are designed for melting and recreating into candies and confections. They are much better than chocolate chips for hot chocolate bombs.
For these white chocolate hot cocoa bombs, you’ll need white candy melts. But feel free to make them with milk or dark chocolate, or even red candy melts, if you prefer.
This Ghirardelli variety pack comes with three flavors — milk chocolate, dark chocolate and white chocolate melts.
If you want even more peppermint flavor, you can find peppermint candy melts.
Hot cocoa mix & fillings
For these mint cocoa bombs, you’ll want to fill them with your favorite peppermint hot cocoa mix. You could even go for peppermint white hot cocoa mix for a totally white chocolate version.
If you’d like to go the homemade route, making your own peppermint cocoa mix is pretty easy to do.
In addition to the hot chocolate, you’ll want to add some other mix-ins. Miniature marshmallows are a classic. You could also add crushed candy canes or other peppermint candies, sprinkles or mini chocolate chips.
Toppings
Once you’ve made the bombs, you can decorate them. Toppings can help to mask the little seam where the two halves of the shells meet.
Drizzle melted chocolate or more white chocolate over top, and then sprinkle on a few toppings, such as:
- crushed candy canes
- red and white sprinkles or candy cane sprinkles
- mini chocolate chips
- mint chips
- chopped peppermint bark
- peppermint crunch
- chocolate shavings
- edible glitter

How to make Peppermint Hot Cocoa Bombs
Making these tasty peppermint cocoa bombs is easier than it looks, but you’ll definitely want to set aside a space to work and a couple of hours since the chocolate will need time to set up.
Melt the white chocolate wafers. (A chocolate warmer is ideal to keep you from having to warm it up constantly, risking burning the chocolate.)
With the back of a spoon or a pastry brush, paint the melted white chocolate into the sides of the mold. It doesn’t have to look pretty on the outside since no one will see the insides. Make sure the chocolate is in an even layer and there are no thin, weak spots.
Set aside until the white chocolate firms up completely. (Refrigerating can help to speed this up.)
Carefully remove the dome halves from the molds. Use the molds as a stand while you assemble the cocoa bombs. This helps to cut down on fingerprints!

Into half of the domes, spoon in 3 tablespoons of hot cocoa mix, mini marshmallows and any other fillings like ground cinnamon or sprinkles into the inside of the molds.
With a paintbrush or small spoon, paint melted chocolate around the edge of one of the empty half spheres and, quickly, press it onto the filled half. Set aside until firm. (You can pop them in the fridge again or leave them at room temperature.)
Decorate them with melted chocolate in a piping bag and add sprinkles or crushed candy cane pieces.
Then remove from molds and place in cellophane bags or a gift box to give away or use! Any airtight container will work — just make sure you store them in a cool place.

How to use Hot Cocoa Bombs
Ready to try put your finished hot chocolate bomb recipe to use? Yay! They are so fun.
First, warm some milk on the stove or in the microwave. Don’t boil it.
Place the hot chocolate bomb in a mug. (A clear glass mug is great for seeing the magic happen!)
Then pour the hot milk over top of the bomb. Watch as the chocolate shell melts into the milk and the marshmallows, candy canes and other fillings are released.

If you feel like it, you can stir in a shot of alcohol, such as Rumchata or peppermint schnapps.
Stir it all together then sip on your creation!

Tips
Make sure the molds are clean and dry. Chocolate can change color or crack when it meets water. When adding chocolate to the molds, remember it doesn't have to look pretty — ideally, no one but you will see the insides! Wear rubber gloves to avoid making fingerprints as you decorate the bombs. For a party, keep warm milk in a slow cooker. Let guests ladle it into their mugs with their hot chocolate bombs.recommended products
