Yesterday marked another trip around the sun for me!

I thought I’d celebrate by posting a recipe for homemade sprinkles.

Sprinkles make everything so much fun, don’t you think? Birthdays especially.

My husband doesn’t agree with me on this.

Chris argues that sprinkles get everywhere, so when you spill a few on the floor, like I did when I made these Birthday Cake White Russian cocktails, they are annoying to step on.

He says sprinkles are like glitter. Whatever. I’ll be over here having fun with my sprinkles.

Or jimmies, hundreds and thousands… Call them what you want.

Homemade sprinkles

Sprinkles are my favorite. I always put them on ice cream and they are wonderful on cupcakes. I love them so much, I decided to learn how to make them.

If you’ve been reading a while, you know I’m the kind of person who likes to make things from scratch. Simple things like homemade simple syrup for cocktails or even homemade Irish cream

It always starts with a simple question like, “Can you make sprinkles?” (The answer is yes.)

I do it just to see how they’re made but also to learn every ingredient that goes into it. It’s so satisfying.

How to make sprinkles

Sprinkles are a lot easier to make than you think.

If you’ve ever made icing or decorated a cake (or both!), then you already have the skill set needed to make sprinkles. And if you haven’t, no worries. They’re still super easy.

You’ll essentially make an icing mixture, dye it with food coloring, then pipe it into thin lines and let them dry.

Once they’re set, you will break them up into smaller pieces, AKA sprinkles! This is the fun part!

Then you can store them in a mason jar and use them on cupcakes and sugar cookie martinis whenever you like.

Equipment for making your own sprinkles

You’ll need a #2 icing tip and a piping bag.

For piping bags, you can use disposable piping bags or, in a pinch, even a ziplock bag with a cut corner. Or save a little $$ (and the earth) and get a reusable piping bag that you’ll use forever.

And you’ll also need gel-based food coloring, which is the same kind of food coloring used for making icing.

If you bake a lot, you probably already have parchment paper and a baking sheet, which will come in handy too.

Once you learn how to make sprinkles, you can use them on everything.

You name it, you can use these homemade sprinkles.

ingredients

instructions

  • Line several baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
  • In a small bowl, combine sugar, water, corn syrup and vanilla. Stir together until the mixture thickens, like the consistency of craft glue. Add more water a 1/4 teaspoon at a time if necessary.
  • Divide the mixture into 4 small bowls and tint with food coloring as desired.
  • Transfer one of the colors to a pastry bag fitted with a small pastry tip (I recommend #2 size). Pipe thin, long lines onto the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with the other colors.
  • Let stand uncovered for several hours or overnight. The stripes should be very firm and easily breakable. Once dry, break into small pieces. Store them in an airtight container.
