Your ultimate guide to lemon cocktails & mocktails

You know the saying — when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. But don’t stop with just lemonade (even though it’s a delicious blend of sweet and sour that’s perfect for hot days).

Lemon is an iconic flavor when it comes to drinks. Whether it stuns at center stage or takes a supporting role, its bite of sour citrus flavor is bright and refreshing. It’s strong enough to stand on its own, but plays well with other flavors like berries, tea and so much more.

Once you know how to make the most of the lemons you get handed, you’ll be ready to whip up any of these delicious drinks!

Tips for using lemons in drinks

For the best lemon flavor in drinks, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Temperature matters. Using room temperature citrus (this tip is for more than just lemons) will yield more juice. The warmth helps release the membranes in the fruit, allowing the juice to flow more freely.
  2. Fresh is best. The bottled stuff will work in a pinch, but can be bitter. Fresh lemon juice gives you a bright punch of flavor that carries through in your finished drink.
  3. Use the best tool for the job. If you want to create perfect lemon garnishes, use a mandolin instead of a knife for more precision. Lemon twists are an impressive addition to many of these drinks!

What to serve with lemon drinks

Lemon drinks can pair so well with both sweet and salty bites. On the sweeter side, try lemon bars or lemon tarts for a citrus smorgasbord or complement the sour with sweet strawberry shortcakes.

If you prefer to balance your sipper with something salty, a charcuterie board would be a great option. Salsa and guacamole are easy for a crowd while blue cheese olives should be on the menu for a cocktail party. Or add some bite-sized fun with popcorn shrimp — lemon goes incredibly well with seafood!

Lemon Margarita
