About this Lemon Drop Martini recipe

Ready for a glass of sunshine? The Lemon Drop Martini is the sweet-and-sour classic cocktail you’ve been looking for. Made with freshly squeezed lemon juice, vodka, triple sec, simple syrup and a sugar rim, this drink is bright, balanced and refreshing.

I’ve ordered Lemon Drops at bars where bottled lemon juice was used instead — and I’ve tested it that way myself — and the difference is obvious. The bottled stuff turns cloying fast, while fresh lemon keeps that clean, lemonade-like flavor you want.

Finish it with homemade lemon sugar and you get a little zesty crunch that takes this cocktail from good to genuinely great. A little lemon twist garnish also adds a deeper citrus aroma as you sip — so luscious!

Perfect for entertaining or unwinding after a long day, it’s a simple drink that feels effortlessly elegant and you’ll see why it’s one of my favorites. And you’ll be in good company — chef Rachael Ray once made it for Oprah Winfrey on her show, and Oprah declared it her favorite cocktail.

Ingredients & essentials

If you want to mix up a lemon drop martini at home, you will need a basic bar tool set with a jigger, shaker and strainer. A sharp knife will help you get a lemon twist garnish, and you’ll also want a shallow plate for rimming the glass. If you want to make your own lemon sugar for the rim, you will also need a rimmed baking sheet *, a sheet of parchment paper * and a microplane zester.

Lemon drop martinis are usually served in martini glasses * (or their stemless counterpart), but use whatever you have!

As for ingredients, it’s a pretty simple drink! Freshly-squeezed lemon juice has less pucker than the store-bought concentrate. Be prepared to adjust the sweetness slightly if you use any kind of store-bought juice with additives (that make it more sour).

For the spirits, vodka provides a nice blank slate in this cocktail that lets the citrus and sweetness shine. You can also have fun with a flavored vodka or use gin if you want to mix things up. Triple sec is a clear orange liqueur and adds a hint of extra citrus flavor and a little more sweetness. A top-shelf brand like Cointreau is also perfect — just make sure it’s clear or it will affect the color of the cocktail.

Simple syrup is a sugary sweetener made with water and sugar. Plain syrup is all you need, but you can also experiment with flavored syrups. If you want to really deepen the lemon flavor, use lemon syrup instead — one of my favorite modifications!

Instructions

The Lemon Drop Martini is a super simple cocktail. At its most basic, you’re just shaking the ingredients together and pouring it into a glass, but if you want to take things a little over the top, make your own lemon sugar and learn how to make the lemon twist garnish to really level things up at home. Here’s my guide to making the ultimate lemon twist garnish with complete instructions.

If you’re making your own lemon sugar, preheat the oven to 150°F (65.5°C) and line a baking sheet * with parchment paper *. You can skip the oven step if you’re using it right away and don’t plan to store the extra.

  1. For the lemon sugar, combine sugar and lemon zest in a small bowl. Use your fingers to rub the zest into the sugar, which releases the oils. Pour the lemon sugar mixture onto the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes then let cool.
  1. Place lemon sugar on a plate. Rub a lemon wedge around the edge of a chilled martini glass. Holding the glass upside-down, roll the edge in the lemon sugar to coat the rim.

juice boost

Want to get the most juice out of your citrus? Let it sit at room temperature for a few hours before juicing. Cold fruit holds onto its juice, while warmer fruit releases it more easily, giving you better results with less effort.

  1. Strain into the rimmed glass, and finish it off with a lemon twist. (A lemon wedge totally works too!)

Tips & tricks

  • Use freshly-squeezed lemon juice for the best flavor. It makes a huge difference, as the store-bought concentrates are more sour.
  • Chill the glasses in the freezer for a few minutes beforehand for an extra refreshing experience.
  • Shake the cocktail vigorously with ice to properly chill and dilute the drink.
  • Don’t skip the lemon sugar! Plain sugar works too, but the lemon zest adds a delightful tanginess.

Substitutions & variations

The Lemon Drop is a great cocktail to experiment with and change up the flavors by swapping out ingredients. You can do this by adding simple syrups, a splash of juice or a flavored vodka.

Blueberry Lemon Drop Martini: Use blueberry syrup instead of plain for a delicious berry flavor. Blueberry vodka would also work nicely here.

Strawberry Lemon Drop: Homemade strawberry syrup will give the strawberry version cocktail a delightful strawberry lemonade flavor.

Lemon Drop Mocktail: For a non-alcoholic version, swap the vodka for a zero-proof spirit like Seedlip Grove 42 *. For the triple sec, use a zero-proof orange liqueur like Lyre’s Orange Sec or a little splash of orange juice.

Garnishes

The classic lemon drop martini has two main garnishes: the lemon twist and a sugar rim. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • lemon wedge: You’ll need a lemon wedge to moisten the rim of the martini glass * so the sugar rim will stick to it. You can also dip the rim of the glass in simple syrup or lemon juice, but be careful to shake off any excess so you don’t have sticky drips on the outside of the glass.
  • rim of lemon sugar: You may certainly use plain sugar on the rim, but lemon sugar adds an extra bite of citrus zest. You can make it with regular granulated sugar and lemon zest.
  • lemon twist: This classy garnish is easy to make with a slice of fresh lemon. Peel or cut the zest off the slice, then twist it around your finger.

You could also garnish lemon drop cocktails with dehydrated lemon slices, a sprig of mint or just drink them as is!

Serving suggestions

The Lemon Drop is a sweet, vodka-based cocktail — more dessert drink than classic martini. That said, citrus goes incredibly well with salty foods, so serve it with classy appetizers like charcuterie cups.

Lemon drops are a great bar drink too, so enjoy them with your favorite savory bar snacks, like chicken wings or mozzarella sticks.

Of course, it’s a great after-dinner drink. You could also enjoy them with anything fruity, like strawberry shortcakes, or lemon-y, like a platter of lemon bars. These lemon drop cookies with a vodka glaze are like the cocktail in cookie form.

FAQ

What is a substitute for triple sec in a lemon drop martini?

Triple sec is an orange liqueur, so you can substitute another orange liqueur. Cointreau is clear like triple sec, so it’s the best substitute, but you could also use another orange liqueur like Grand Marnier, but it will affect the light lemony color.

Can you batch a Lemon Drop Martini?

Yes — this cocktail is easy to prep ahead, which makes it great for entertaining.
You can make the lemon sugar in advance and store it in an airtight jar at room temperature. For the cocktail itself, mix the fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, vodka and triple sec together and refrigerate until you’re ready to serve.

When it’s party time, rim the glasses with lemon sugar just before serving — not too far ahead, or the rims can get sticky. To keep things simple, skip the lemon twist and garnish with pre-cut lemon slices or wedges instead.
