Your ultimate guide to Kentucky Derby Cocktails

Get out your julep cups *, bowties and (very) elaborate hats, y’all! The Kentucky Derby is almost here.

If you’re unfamiliar, the Kentucky Derby is a race of thoroughbred horses that is held on the first Saturday in May each year. It takes place at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The Derby is the first leg of the American Triple Crown, the championship title given to a horse that wins the three main horse races in a single season: the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.

The Kentucky Derby has been nicknamed by Derby enthusiasts as “the most exciting two minutes in sports,” because the most important race typically lasts just that long. It’s a weekend event, since the Kentucky Oaks, another race for 3-year-old Thoroughbred fillies (young female horses), is held on Friday and the Derby is on Saturday.

Whether or not you like to watch horse racing, Derby Day parties are a great reason to enjoy spring food, bourbon drinks and chocolate desserts on the first weekend in May. From the classic mint julep (the official drink of the Kentucky Derby) to more adventurous bourbon cocktails, there is lots of inspiration below for your Derby party planning.

Quick tips for hosting a Derby party

If you’re going to host a Kentucky Derby party, there are a few things you should consider to make your celebration a smashing success.

1. Dress up. Besides bourbon (and horses, of course), the Kentucky Derby is most known for the extravagant fashion, especially hats, that race-goers wear. You’ll want a fabulous hat for the festivities — if you’re able, have a few extras on-hand for guests who may forget theirs.

2. Prep the drinks. Setting up a drink bar is one of my favorite hosting tricks. Whether it’s a Bloody Mary bar for brunch or margarita bar for Taco Tuesday, a drink bar allows guests to craft their drinks exactly how they like them. It’s also a great way to save you time and prevent you from getting stuck behind the bar for the entire party.

For the Kentucky Derby, try a mint julep bar with different bourbon choices, several simple syrup flavors and a few garnishes in addition to mint leaves. Don’t forget tools to stir, strain or shake depending on the drink you choose to feature! Julep cups are pretty, but they’re optional in my opinion.

3. Offer something non-alcoholic. Zero-proof spirits are a must when hosting. They allow an easy alternative for anyone who prefers a non-alcoholic beverage without having to create a totally different drink. You can opt for Ritual Zero Proof * Whiskey or make your own homemade zero-proof spirit.

4. Set the scene. Don’t forget to have a way to watch the running of the Kentucky Derby. After all, the horses are the stars of the show! Find out where to watch from the Louisville Courier Journal.

5. Make it fun! For a little extra fun, have attendees vote for their favorite horse and see who is right after the race.

What to serve with Kentucky Derby Cocktails

If you are planning a party to watch the Kentucky Derby or any of the other Triple Crown races, you’re going to need some food and drinks with Southern flair! There are a number of must-have recipes — check out these Kentucky Derby food ideas for more!

Savory Derby food

  • Set out bowls of spicy cheese straws, which are staples of Southern parties.
  • There’s not much more southern than a big plate of deviled eggs. Top them with chives, jalapeño slices or bacon bits.
  • Make pimento cheese for a dip or serve it on sandwiches. (Add bacon if you dare.) Dill dip is another great dip for a veggie plate.
  • The Kentucky Hot Brown is the signature Louisville sandwich filled with roasted turkey, juicy tomatoes, smoked bacon and melted white cheddar cheese, that’s smothered in mornay sauce.

Derby desserts

The best Kentucky Derby cocktails

Now that we’ve got the snacks figured out, let’s talk about the drinks! There’s going to be a lot of mint, so go ahead and stock up so you can give every drink a gorgeous mint sprig garnish.

Most of the cocktails below call for bourbon, the official spirit of the horse race. If you have a favorite, certainly feel free to use the bourbon of your choice.
