Tools & glassware

For homemade margarita mix, you’ll need a pitcher or a big mixing bowl to combine everything. To get fresh lime juice from real limes, you’ll want to use a citrus juicer or squeezer.

To make a homemade margarita, you’ll also need a jigger, a cocktail shaker and a hawthorne strainer. However, if you’re making drinks for a party, you can mix everything together in a pitcher, including the tequila.

Margaritas can be served in rocks glasses and stemless martini glasses, as well as coupe glasses and margarita glasses.

Ingredients

Margarita mix is different from sour mix, which contains both lemon and lime juices. Sour mix can be used to make margaritas, but the flavor will be slightly different.

Here’s what you’ll need to grab at the grocery store to make this recipe:

Lime juice: Fresh lime juice tastes the best, but if you’re making a big batch, I understand wanting to cut a few corners. You can usually find larger bottles of lime juice or, better yet, organic lime juice, at most grocery stores.

Simple syrup: You can purchase this or make your own. Simple syrup is incredibly easy to make with just granulated sugar and water. You can use agave nectar instead, but it can make the color a bit darker.

Tequila: While there’s no tequila in the mix, you will certainly need it to make margaritas! However, you can also use it in virgin margaritas and sip it on its own or with a zero-proof spirit such as Ritual tequila alternative.

Garnishes: You’ll also need to cut up lime wedges or lime wheels, and you should rim the glasses with margarita salt or sugar. For a party, you may wish to offer guests both salt and sugar, as everyone has a preference.

Variations and substitutions

Try one of these variations on this recipe:

Flavored margarita mix: You can use a flavored simple syrup like strawberry simple syrup to make a mix.

Frozen margaritas: Use the mix with tequila and ice in the blender for an ice-cold, frozen version.

Daiquiri mix: Use this mix to make classic daiquiris. Just use light rum instead of tequila.

Mojito mix: Instead of plain simple syrup, use mint syrup to make this into a classic mojito mix, then combine it with light rum.

How to make margaritas with Margarita Mix

Once you have margarita mix, it’s time to make margaritas! The BEST time, if you ask me.

Place salt or sugar on a plate. Rub a lime wedge around the edge of the glass (or glasses). Roll the rim of the glasses in the salt to coat the rim.

For 1 margarita, shake 2 ounces tequila and 2 ounces margarita mix together in a cocktail shaker

For a pitcher of margaritas, combine 4 cups tequila with 4 cups of margarita mix. Pour into rimmed glasses.

Garnish with lime slices or lime wedges.
