First, make a simple syrup. Combine granulated sugar with water on the stove over low heat and stir until dissolved, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let the syrup cool.
In a pitcher or mixing bowl, combine the cooled simple syrup with the lime juice and stir until combined.
If serving all of it, add tequila to the pitcher as well. If you wish to add an orange liqueur, use 3 cups tequila and 1 cup orange liqueur instead. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
For a margarita, combine 2 ounces tequila and 2 ounces margarita mix. If you wish to use triple sec or a higher-end orange liqueur like Cointreau, use 1½ ounces tequila and ½ ounce triple sec.

Makes 4 cups margarita mix (8 cups if you add the tequila). Makes 16 servingsUse fresh lime juice for the freshest taste, but the bottled concentrate will work perfectly fine.
