I’ve been thinking a lot about ways to up my home cocktail game lately without splurging. One easy thing to do is to create flavored sugars to either mix into a cocktail or to use on the rim of a glass.
Last month, I shared a recipe for Homemade Vanilla Sugar over on My Cooking Spot. It makes a great substitute for vanilla extract in baking, but it’s also delicious stirred into coffee or sprinkled over fruit.
Today I’m going to show you how to make sugar flavored with lavender. To make lavender sugar, you’ll need to make a little sachet of dried lavender flowers — not unlike the ones you might tuck into a drawer to keep clothes smelling fresh and clean. You’ll add this tiny sachet, made of cheesecloth, to a jar of granulated sugar and let it rest for a month or so.
You’ll wind up with a jar of floral-scented sugar you can incorporate into all kinds of things. Use it to flavor icing or cookie dough. Spoon it over fresh fruit for dessert, or even mix it into homemade ice cream. Use it to sweeten iced tea or homemade lemonade. Stir it into a cocktail or use it on the rim. You can keep it for yourself or give it to a new neighbor, friend or bride as a gift.
There are all kinds of possibilities for homemade flavored sugars. Be sure to try my recipe for Homemade Vanilla Sugar as well! I’d love to know what you would use it for, so be sure to leave a comment or send me a tweet! // susannah

Yum!!! I’ve only ever tried lemon and vanilla flavoured sugars. They taste so delicious, it’s a shame I never get around to making more.
Lavender would make for some amazing flavours, icing would be divine!
